Surf Fiesta report from Bahia Asuncion

The 4th annual Surfing Competition was held at Los Choros yesterday and was a wonderful family affair. It was a perfect day and even though the swell has gone down, there was still a good enough wave to make the surfers shine.

This year due to the economy there wasnt a sponsor and the event nearly didnt happen but the queen of the fiestas candidate and some local businesses and nomads stepped up to the plate and provided financial support and prizes.
special thanks go out to Nomad "Bomber" who provided some boards, wetsuits, wax etc that we used for prizes for the competition....the kids were so happy!!

There was an excellent turnout and surfers from other baja beach towns showed up for the event...still not one gringo surfer has entered and the organizers remarked it would be fun is some had shown up.

Our local surf club Los Jurjos did a great job at hosting and even made an enormous batch of ceviche for everyone...free food...yeah! There was a beer tent, great reggae music, little events for the children and lots of different catagories of heats.

As always, there are thrills and chills...some of the spectators pets were popular like the big iguana, Beth's doggie with sand booties on and a pelican who joined in the fun...he figured he could score some of that free food.

My favorite was the kiddie heat where the youngsters got out there and did their best with lifeguards standing by.

It was a really fun day at the beach with a terrific family atmosphere as you will see in the photos. Here is a link to the slideshow....

hey geoff...did you see the slide show? problem is I have a crappy little camera and the big sets were way out so my surf photos are pretty lousy....i borrowed a friends camera but it didnt have a zoom either...

besides...it's not really about the surfers anyway....it was a great excuse for families to get out to the beach and watch their kids, neighbours and relatives surf, boogie board and eat ceviche, llisten to reggae..check out the guys, socialize etc.

Nobody there had anything more than small digital cameras that i saw...bummer cause the waves were sweet.

thanks Bob...yes, this is an annual event we hope will grow...what is nice is that it is such a family gathering.

I found it very picturesque and heart warming to see the diverse mix of locals there...surfers, kids, pets, cowboys, even the nuns came out...everyone enjoying themselves. It is one of my favorite events of the year.

Looks like that ladys' wet suit is too big for her. Maybe it'll fit me? Nah, I don't need another habit.
Sorry couldn't resist. I'm glad everyone had fun! Even sister giggles. I'm bad!
