Shortcut? from HW1 to HW3 w/2WD Sedan

Hello!

I have another question about driving in my sedan. This time, the route I am wondering about is a road from just south of San Vincente (HW1) to eastward to Lazaro Card##as where it connects with highway 3.

Looks like this is pretty much the only road that connects HW 1 and 3 before going all the way to Ensenada. Or will it be better (or possible) to drive via Mike's Sky Ranch??

The Mike's Sky Rancho road is not for sedans south of Mike's to Rancho Coyote... It is a 4WD trail over the mountain going south from Mike's. I have not used it since late 2005... I did a web page with a road log on it. http://vivabaja.com/905

The Valle Trinidad (Card##es) to San Vicente road is much better, but it does have a steep grade... I used 4WD, but was not madatory. The road is graded. I have not been over it since 2001.

I know it looks like a long detour, but in a sedan I would suggest staying on Hwy. 3 to Ensenada and then go south on 1. It would be faster for you and no chance of getting stuck in a washout or too steep unpaved grade.

It's not a problem if you turn off hwy 1 at KM103. Many locals do it in there cars. It is a much better road than the Gonzaga Bay hwy 5 road. If I remember right it's about 40 miles. Be careful when you get near Card##as as sometimes there are large water puddles from rain and/or irrigation run off and traffic causes large ruts. This route is used in the Baja 500 race.

Mika is going from San Felipe west to Hwy. 1...
Basically, you leave Hwy. 3 at the paved entrance road for Trinidad (at Pemex)... take it to the end, and turn right... work your way to the west end of the valley and the road climbs up and over that mountain range and drops you a few miles south of San Vicente. IF YOU GO THAT WAY, per TW's suggestion.

I would take the turn off at the Pemex station to the end go right then left at the end and go out to the electric station and turn right just before it. Follow the road to hwy 1. I was on it June 4th before the Baja 500 and it was OK, there are a couple of spots but nothing a car can't make. With higher clearence I would go thru Mike's Sky Ranch for more fun.

Good roads not so fun.
Bad roads lots of fun.

Thank you for the info! And Thank you David for the picture. : )
It is very convincing (that I should NOT take that route with my car).

Again, I am amazed by this forum how I can get detailed information so quickly!
