The Ultimate Shrimp Taco

We went down to La Paz recently to pay the Fideicomisos, and our reward was a visit to Ostioneria Bismark-cito.

This pleasure palace is located at about ground zero on the Malecon, and is packed with locals for lunch and dinner.

The shrimp are spiced to perfection and then breaded and deep fried......you humor yourself at the condiment "extras" bar with several tame sauces, a scorching habanero salsa, and the best cole slaw south of my kitchen. Onions and chiles notwithstanding, this stuff is fantastico.

We enjoyed a satisfying round for lunch, and then went back for brunch the next day. And the jamaica water was the perfect refreshing drink. They have wonderful oysters, fish dishes and all the rest, but those shrimp tacos...................

No te pierdes!! :dudette::yes:

I also like my shrimp tacos with some Jamaica juice! How much were those little tasty treats?

Lips,

The shrimp were so sweet and crunchy, I'm getting all slobbery just thinking about them!!

If I remember correctly, it was 60 pesos for 2 tacos and a nice tall iced jamaica water. So that was $4.61 US. Such a deal.

maybe i don't know what a good shrimp taco is like, however, whenever i go to la mision, i stop at this truck past la fonda and they have the BEST ones for less than $2 each... sometimes i think i go to mexico just to have them again. it's right across the sign that says "RESPONIBLE"(sp)?

the lady there is so nice also and also, i ask for flour tortillas.

Bismarkcito serves the food cold, they take way too long to take your order, the food isnt very good, its expensive, tortillas fall appart before you eat your tacos. They have a great location, but not much else.

On Loretanas defence, i have heard that sometimes, the lady that started it all still cooks, and shes supposed to be very good, but i havent had luck in 3 years.:(

Jesse,

I'm sure it was the "Lady" cooking that day, and my friends from Loreto who took me there definitely mentioned her.

To tell the truth, we really wanted to eat at your place, but it was a Monday and you were closed.

We ended up going to Caffe Milano that evening, and I will save that review for another time. ;)

As always, it really depends on who is working the stove. I wormed my way into a lunch table at the French Laundry in Yountville, California a few years back as I was passing thru Napa County and the meal was a disappointment.

But the next time I'm in La Paz its your place or nothing!! :saint:

French Laundry..... phooey!:P

I'll have to admit, getting a (real) good shrimp taco in Baja is tough.

I think this is perhaps the second time I have posted - so I must feel strongly about this. I have lived in Todos Santos for eight years and, like everyone here, I go to La Paz often to take care of business. I have eaten at Tres Virgenes and it is indeed spectacular. BUT - I believe the smoked marlin tacos at Bismark are among the finest things I have eaten. I don't want to get preachy but - I lived in the Napa Valley for many years - all about food - and have traveled in Spain (yes, San Sebastian) and France - so I am not a burgers and fries kinda person. I love Bismark. And now I will shut up for another several months or even years.

My favorite shrimp taco's.............Mariscos German-out of a truck parked at 35th and University in San Diego, between 805 and the I 15. Their truck has a San Felipe address on it so they may have a sister restaurant there.

For those passing through San Diego it IS WORTH A STOP believe me. They have smoked marlin taco's as well as fish and pulpo, the menu goes on and on.

The Shrimp tacos are $2.50 the fish tacos$1.00.

Mariscos German

They also have a brick-and-mortar restaurant:

German Mariscos
Address: 2802 Ocean View Blvd, San Diego, CA 92113
Phone: (619) 239-3782

This place gets a lot of love from the San Diego chowhounds. Some claim that the restaurant is better than the truck.

Not that I would know - when I leave Baja to visit San Diego I want burgers and sushi.

Craving Baja Donuts

Think lard. That is why they taste so good.

Shame on me, I haven't tasted a Baka bacon-wrapped hot dog yet, do you know where I can get one in Rosarito?
