“In Mexico it is dangerous to speak the truth. It is even dangerous to know the truth.”
Interesting article about Mexico and it's prosecution of the "war on drugs".
________________________________________________
"In the almost three years since President Felipe Calderón launched a war on drug cartels, border towns in Mexico have turned into halls of mirrors
where no one knows who is on which side or what chance remark could get you murdered. Some 14,000 people have been killed in that time—the worst
carnage since the Mexican Revolution—and part of the country is effectively under martial law. Is this evidence of a creeping coup by the military? A
war between drug cartels? Between the president and his opposition? Or just collateral damage from the (U.S.-supported) war on drugs? Nobody knows:
Mexico is where facts, like people, simply disappear. The stakes for the U.S. are high, especially as the prospect of a failed state on our southern
border begins to seem all too real."

The reporter seems to be leaning a lot on the negative aspects of the military, almost like pushing for a story that may or may not be there. I don't
doubt theres plenty of problems, theres idiots everywhere that will do ilegal things, but overall, the military is doing a good job. He could have
written the story sitting in his office 2,000 miles away, old news.

The reporter, Philip Caputo, is a HIGHLY respected journalist and it's doubtful he would write anything without extensive research.
Nor is it his first time writing about Mexico.

He might be, but his story was pretty short on new perspectives or even news.

Old news in Mexico. New to many north of the border.

Jesse - I remember you predicting 8 or 10 years ago that the military would step forward and take charge of some of Mexico's ongoing/endemic problems
- I don't recall that you ventured as to what degree - as in an actual coup. I think the theme back then was narco stuff - but I could be wrong. I
think you called it pretty well - things are still evolving.
Your english has gotten alot better since then - do you have a gringa girl friend or something?
(don't take offense man)

Here it is from 2005:

this nation is losing it, in pretty much all areas except macro economics. narco trafficking is unstopable, reforms are stalled, we suffer from a
crisis of leadership, the PAN has turned out to be a complete failure, the rich are getting richer and the poor are still poor, and the level of anger
and violence is rising everywhere. Just a few months ago the nations top military general said, "if you guys(meaning politicians) insist on driving
this nation into the grown, just remember, the military is watching, and we know everything thats going on", that was a very direct warning

This sounds so much like what happened in Turkey. Their military intervened on more than one occasion to protect the idea of secular governance.
Unfortunately, history keeps repeating itself. Thus, an Islamic leaning government again. People be people.
