This Sunday at La Fonda in La Mision

The food was very good and the service also.

They have really taken it up a notch. We talked to several people who said that they are coming back to Baja because of the good memories and now, the good experiences.

Glad to hear that Jan. It's just that, La Fonda without Dymitri is a day without sunshine. I hang around in my past. :)

I think Dave mentioned that rumor. Too bad for Dymitri. I remember ten years back when he wanted a million for what he had there. He just wanted out. He has a son in the area who isn't worth mentioning and I hope he doesn't return as well.
What a nightmare for Dymitri. There comes a time in every hard working persons life that they should be able to say, "Bye Bye."

No Prime Rib

But a very large joint of pork carnitas was available, carved to order.

I can't emphasize enough how good the service was.

Our waiter insisted on taking away my dirty service utensils so I could pick up clean replacements on my next pass through the buffet.

The grill chef insisted on making me fresh eggs for huevos rancheros and they were spectacular.

Well, you may have had pork, but it wasn't carnitas. Carnitas are slow roasted pork that is shredded and re-roasted again to caramelize it. Carnitas are not "carved to order".

NOB, it is illegal (against health code laws) to bring used utensils or plates back to a buffet line. It contaminates the food. I'm guessing the waiter was grabbing the utensils to keep people from getting back in line with them.

Carnitas, Shmarnitas

You can nitpick me on the semantics.

The cook asked me if I would like some carnitas and he carved a serving off a big honking leg of pork. The meat was juicy and flavorful. And the guacamole and pico de gallo in the aisle next to the carving station was excellent.

I thought Carnitas was pork boiled in lard. Haven't we beat the cholesterol out of this subject before...and before...and..?

For real carnitas, try Magana's on the old road in La Mision. Great, now I'm hungry, and stuck in Orange.

There's no shortage of carnitas recipes. In fact, if you Google carnitas, you even hit on what they refer to as beef carnitas. That's just wrong! I do tend to agree with arrowhead and Dennis, as to what the most widely accepted version is. The wrinkle is that cooking in lard is part of the initial process. Then shredding and re-roasting is the finish. I also remember having dinner at La Fonda a few years ago and the special was pork loin roast. Biggest piece of meat I can recall. Tasted great, but it wasn't carnitas. That said, as was mentioned by noproblemo, killer location. it'd be great if they made a comeback.

Yea Dennis his son was a two time looser Parolee doing time for meth sales.
Dymitri always treated those with darker skin different.
No love loss between the two of us you see...
Any who went in for breakfast just to find that the prices on the menu have been raised slightly and the portions are smaller. Well it's all for the best I probably need to push away anyway-
Sorry I dont share the love fest for the prick the way the rest of you do. He really F&^%ked over those workers at the old restaurant. Kinda reminds me of that other Prick John who's hiding out in PV after F-ing over those guys at the "Palm Grill" What a couple of friggen loosers thinking they could relocate to Mexico and pull the bull Ship down here!
