bancomer

When we lived in Baja we had an account with Bancomer in Maneadero. When we returned to the US we gradually withdrew most of the money via a US ATM but a small balance remained in late 1997. Our bancomer atm card expired in june 99. Does anybody know if Bancomer is still in business in Baja and how I might contact the bank to reactivate the card and/or to make a deposit before returning to Baja in the next couple of months. Thanks Ron

Thanks for the info. Not sure if I had a minimum fee free balance requirement so probably better off just using a US bank card to obtain ATM money. It was a bit of a challenge to open the account and get them to accept my deposit. They required proof of Mexico residency ie lease agreement, utility receipt in our name, passport etc but once it was set up I could write a US check for deposit and it would credit in about 5 days. Since this trip will be of a shorter duration I will just forget that I ever had an account with them. Ron

If there was no activity in over a year they probably closed your account and took your remaining funds.:(:o Happened to me about 2 years ago.:fire:

The same red tape hassle still exists with all Bancomers. And the hassle factor doesn't end with your opening the account. I closed my account in Santa Rosalia because it wasn't worth it. You still have to wait in line, sometimes for over an hour, for one of the bank officers at his desk to approve most transactions before you can even get in the long teller lines. When I first opened my account, they wouldn't even accept my $10,000 cashier's check from Bank of America. After insisting that he call his jefe in La Paz to get an OK to deposit it, on hold until it clears, they finally did that.

Now, after closing the account, I have never needed it. ATMs (Santender, not Bancomer) and B of A Safesend Program are the only way to go when you need pesos.
