Crime ends night shopping in Rosarito- Stores to close at 7pm
It was on another thread just last week I was saying the major obstacle I saw in doing business in Rosarito Beach was cash handling- as in how to keep
your money in your store and how to get it home or to the bank safely.
Apparently the problem was a little bigger than I had imagined. We haven't ventured out after dark in a while and our instincts were right-on...
El Mex reports:
"In Rosarito Beach, an announcement was made by the President of the National Chamber of Commerce of Rosarito Beach,Jesus de Galilee Pena Garcia that
faced with rampant crime, business are closing at 7:00PM. Pena Garcia stated that in addition to the insecurity, shops are facing an economic crisis
because people do not have any money to spend. He feels that people are being forced into crime because they do not have jobs. He also stated that
shop owners are at risk of being physically assaulted or shot because aggressive offenders will now obviously, stop at nothing."
Based on all the Mexican doctors being kidnapped this week- Gringos coming down for medical treatment had better call first to make sure the "Doctor
is in"... and not "In hiding".
The Christmas season always brings out the worst criminal elements this close to the border. So everyone please try to make it a happy and safe one
and be kind and helpful to your neighbors...

If the shops are closing at 7:00 pm it will make things good for Walmart. Tijuana Walmart announced they will stay open till midnight on weekends
this December.

No one's suggesting anyone close at 7pm. It's a voluntary decision. Based primarily on lack of business and DST. It gets dark early.
Crime is rampant, though. Way worse than what the media is reporting.

All The Mexican Doctors being kidnapped This Week?
What did I miss?
And I'm assuming the author's point of view was about how the recession has affected the job market. Obviously, the cartel violence ties into this,
but the depth of the recession and job losses NOB are now being magnified SOB.

That may well be true- but these four Doctors are losing their incomes and their personal freedom apparently:
"The kidnapping of Dr. Iran Cota-Cota Wednesday night by a group of heavily armed men who dragged him violently from his home. Dr. Cota-Cota is the
fourth doctor to have been kidnapped in Tijuana. He is also the leader of the National Union of Social Security Workers Union, who organized rapidly
in Tijuana, Ensenada, Mexicali and San Luis Rio colorado, Sonora to protest the abduction of Dr. Cota-Cota.
Yesterday in Tijuana, 2,000 members of the IMSS Union marched in Tijuana for his immediate release and today, Attorney General Rommel Moreno Manjarrez
announced there has been no formal complaint lodged by the family of the doctor."

How many out there read this and just say " I'm not a Doctor what do I have to worry about?"
You have to wonder if your Doctor is in hiding for fear of being kidnapped?
You can't go out at night in Rosarito?
This again is starting to test my Love of Baja.
Am I alone amoungst you hardcore Baja Travelers?

Dave,
I usually can just blow these stories off, but for some reason this one.............
I know many of you Nomads live in Baja Norte, and I feel for your situation.
I'm going to a wedding in April at La Fonda, and I will be wanting to go out to dinner other that La Fonda for one of the two nights,
but.................when i hear this stuff it takes the fun out of even planning something.

It's an easy drive over to the Guadalupe valley via the free road and el Tigre cutoff. Several nice restaurants there as well as the HalfWay house or
even next door at Poco Cielo. Ensenada is another option.
Why even bother with Rosarito? It's a dump...Always has been.

I love the tact. However, there is a certain truth, just as with the Av
Revolucion area in TJ, in that their growth and economic health was predicated way too much on kids partying. Kids who couldn't legally drink NOB and
who didn't even know what a passport was.

If you're staying at La Fonda, it would be a bit of a haul to go to Ensenada for dinner, when there are other nearby choices. There's even Puerto
Nuevo.

The crime will be over Jan 1. Everyone is just stealing for Christmas. No one wants to disappoint their children- who sit in front of the boob-tube
all day watching US dubbed commercials for "chinese" toys they can't live without.
I have noticed many Rosarito families moving east of the cuota since summer ended- where rents fall 50%, but crime triples. My neighborhood must have
20 "for rent" signs out right now- they def. don't have a supply/demand mentality for setting rents.

I never understood that rental price situation. I was just checking that out in San Carlos. I see that alot in retail as well. How about instead of
selling 1 item every month for $100, how about selling 100 of them for $50. ???
I was just in Rosarito at the calafia condos, most condo owners wanted 200-300 a night. I went with the reasonable person who lowered his rates for
the same type unit to $100. Listed right next to the other units on the website. It was very quiet and had a nice chat with the owner of Ricky's.
Nice guy who just wants the people back! I did have a fun time fishing the rosarito pier and chatting with some locals from TJ.
Overall the vibe just didnt seem right. It amazes me that just an hour south the vibe changes dramitically to the positive!

By the time of the wedding, it will be getting dark much later again. A trip out to wine country is very easy and safe during daylight. Just leave for
dinner a little early, and leave a hour before sunset. I have heard the El Tigre road is paved now. You could also try Magana's, in La Mision, right
at the bridge on the free road. Not fancy, but very good food. Try the carnitas!!
