Asuncion Trip - December, 2009 (Revised)
ASUNCION TRIP REPORT
(Note: This trip report has been revised in 2015 to restore deleted Photobucket pictures from 2009.)
I recently made my first trip to Asuncion by land. It will not be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting and sightseeing in this clean little Baja
village.
Here's my trip report of Asuncion:
We drove a 34ft. motorhome from Conception Bay north to Vizcaino, about 140 miles.
I topped off with gas at the Vizaino Pemex station I have never had any issues at this station, so no complaints from me. Many
times over the years I've enjoyed having a taco or buying some dates while here.
..and made the turn WEST to Asuncion and Bahia Tortugas at this clearly-marked intersection.
The first section of pavement is well-potholed and there are cattle, so drive with extreme caution. Eventually you will come to the Y with
turns to Asuncion (left) and Bahia Tortugas (right)
The turnoff to Asuncion is newly paved, and also has some drifting sand dunes. Also a few ganado..cattle. The last 8 miles before
town is unpaved.
ARRIVING IN ASUNCION
We drove in at dusk and not being familiar with the village, we didn't find Juan y shari's place right away, so I pulled up to the Asuncion
police station to inquire about camping. The very friendly police squad showed us where we could camp for the night.
Very accomodating bunch of policia. Three of them jumped into their pickup to escort us to this very nice campspot right on the
beach. We all introduced ourselves and the squad assured us we would have a restful sleep..which we did, waking up to the pleasant sound of
waves splashing the shore. Muchas gracias, amigos.
More Scenic Views:
Some local children play on the beach...and quite near a sea lion basking on the sands. The sea lion left after the youngsters disappeared.
Neighbor in a ' seaview paddock' Ah...we were going shopping, but not for road apples.
Hah..As it turned out, we had parked right next to Campo Sirena...the campground we had been looking for last night.
We met some nice folks who were renting a home next to the campground while thier future Asuncion home is under construction. They were great people
and called shari's cellphone to let her know we had arrived. Like Mulege, good things seem to happen frequently in Asuncion.
And presto...There she is above ...shari guiding us to our new campsite. Whatta gal...
This is what downtown Asuncion looks like...nice new wide streets.
We found many tiendas, a small gas station, beer depot, many cafes, pharmacy, and surprisingly.......
..a health food store.
The new sports arena. Asuncion is a progressive town.
We get the following grand tour through town, past newer developments, and out to the bay near thier waterfront home.
Lots of good real estate bargains...I looked at several options on the first day.
The town is spread out..with this neighborhood being nearer the ocean. I liked some in this area with ocean views.
I ended up buying 4 large lots with ocean views..and am drawing up plans to build an auto salvage park and a 2-story ladies bar/disco.

A humorous moment unfolds before us as this dog harassed the scooter driver down the street. There was a good verbal exchange between chaser
and chasee.
Not to be left out of the action..more dogs happily join in the chase. ..Almost colliding with Co-pilot.
shari and Juan invite us to camp in their front yard. shari guides me into a perfect sea view site. And thier amigo and worker,
Juan Carlos, builds up a nice step for our motorhome's entry door.
We had a great campsite next to Juan y Shari's oceanfront home. The views were simply fantastic as was the weather. And I really loved the
afternoon Sea Breezes...these happened like clockwork right around 5 pm. Made things very refreshing indeed.

The Blowhole was right below us. With a resounding BOOM...it was inspiring at certain times.
Lots of marine fowl..as shown by this raft of cormorants. I can see where Diane gets all the inspiration for her
famous bird photos.
This was my favorite treat. Juan gave me some of his delicious smoked tuna....damn yummy.
Speaking of eating...shari took us to her friends place for a wondrous platter of tostadas...mmm.
Then over to another friend's casa for a art show that was nothing short of spectacular. If you go to Asuncion, this gallery is a
must-see. Some of these will adorn my walls.

And Now..back to the really important stuff of this trip....
2nd thing I do after setting up camp...tackle box inspection.
The fishing? STUPENDOUS. Get with Juan.
We are now back at Coyote Bay...but maybe not for too long.....the motorhome is still packed.

Dang...
I wanted to post a photo of this handy item I recently bought for camping..and forgot...so here it is.
A great collapsible garbage bin with a zippered-top. Very essential gear for us RVers...or whomever. Simply pull open via the
velcro fasteners and ..presto..it springs into a full-size garbage can.

Great Photos. How did your motor home like the washboard of the last few miles into Asuncion? Did you stay in Shari's campground at all--I ask
because I am wondering how you would fit? We have a Bounder, about your size, and I would like to take it in there instead of my truck camper.

Hola Jorge,
You will have no problems with either the road or the Campo Sirena. I actually took the wrong road on the last few miles into Asuncion..the
rolly-polly part, but did not bottom out with my long overhang. The washboards DO make it a 4-or-40 road, and you'll just have to go slow or risk
your wife's wrath. The broken pavement on the first section of highway west of Vizcaino is the worst for us large RV's...
...and then there was the cow incident.
Sorry, but I failed to mention in my first post about this close call. In over 40 years of driving around southern Baja I have only hit 1 cow..and
that was in self-defense. The next closest cow collision happened on this stretch of highway. I got the speeding Southwind stopped just under the
teats of a huge milker...Be Careful! I envisioned the wipers sloshing milk back and forth..back and forth.
I think you will like camping anywhere in the area, but especially in Campo Sirena as it's walking distance to anywhere in metro-Asuncion. We just
stayed the 1 night there and then moved so we could block shari and Juan's view. 
Well, gotta go now..the semis are here... old tires to unload for the salvage yard we're building next to Diver's land.

Nice report. Is that public camping where you stayed the first night??? From the picture it looks like a very pretty spot.

the spot where roger was first camped is in the public beach parking area in the middle of town where there is alot of traffic and a popular drinking
hang out so can get a bit noisy especially on the weekends...it's right in front of the 3 Hermanos restaurant too.

Yes, he was on your land. My dogs recognized your dirt pile---Tom has kept it watered for you. 
The salvage yard should be great---they usually draw lots of birds and it will be so close to home.
