Shellfish Poisoning -- here?
We're used to PSP reports in Canada, but down here we haven't heard of any. When we see the red algae bloom, we think "bioluminescence!" but not about
the hazards those little dinoflagellates can cause to food.
What are the risks of eating shellfish and fish in the Bahia Concepcion during red tides?
Thanks for any good info.

the "red tide" per se, has absolutely nothing to do with paralytic shellfish poisoning...they only happen to appear at the same time so folks
associate the two....in the NW that time is in the warmer months; july, august and early sept....down here i have never heard of PSP occurring but
that doesn't mean i'm right...i eat em.

We tested 7 dozen oysters last week and they were fine.

Well, there's just a lot of info on the internet about all kinds of nasty toxins and susceptable (sic) fish & shellfish, and a lot of them are in
Bahia Concepcion. I'm not an alarmist, but I don't want to get sick, either, or cause my friends to get sick.
The only test I've heard of is taking a raw clam and putting it to your lips. PSP will cause your lips to tingle. It might work, but I don't want to
shuck and kiss dozens of clams just to see and then get sick anyway.

We tested them by eating them. They were really good. In 35 years of coming to Baja I have
eaten every kind of shellfish and have never had a problem.

Back in the 80's my ex wife, me and a friend ate a jar of oysters. My ex and I were fine but my friend never wants to see anything that ever had a
shell again! I was pretty sure someone was dying outside our window....and he still wished he had! It only takes one I guess.
