Suggestions needed from Fly Fishermen
Which flies and or jigs would you suggest for trolling behind a kayak along the coast and in the bays in BCS on mainly the Pacific side and probably
on the Sea of Cortez side?
He is strictly a fly fisherman and it probably does not matter what he catches as he almost always does catch and release.
Thanks

He should consider one rig with fast-sink line for jigs and another with medium sink line for flies.
Here is my all time favorite surf fly.

Clouses are great...but if he's gonna troll them behind his kayak they might not be ideal. Clousers flies can spin when trolled due the dumbell eyes.
The result is a terribly twisted leader or worse yet a twisted fly line. Lefty's deceivers will do the trick and will likely troll better.

What is it called, and must say.. I never fly fished the surf and that seems like it would be a blast.. what would you catch with something like this
in the surf? and how do you work the cast and the line in the surf??
Used to use fresh water gear off the rocks, but never tried a "fly" .... everyday... something new.. just great

Really it is more floating, ----he will be in his kayak and like on the rivers where he lives, he is apt to drift a fly behind him as he floats down
the river in his raft. Usually he rows, drifts, and then stops and fishes----lots of fun in the raft.
He and his brother are more the elitist flyfishermen. On the raft, give me a spinning rod, a lure and and I will catch the trout and have fun!
Hard to paddle a kayak fast enough to really troll.

Whistler is right, the fly above is a So Fla "flats" fly and bonefish do eat it up. It was given to me with a few almost identical twins a few years
back.
Please do not get the idea that I am a "fly fisherman" as I am a novice at best. That said, when flyfishing surf, I was shown to stand in crotch deep
water and lay the fly about 45 degree off the shore so the wave and current action would take the fly slightly away from you and then towards shore.

I troll flies in my float tube with a sinking line, works great. Can cover a lot of depths by kick, wait, let fly drop, kick and the retrieve brings
fly to the surface, great way to cover lots of depths.
That Crazy Charlie looks great, right color for shrimp fly. Barb up is good for casting over rocky and weedy areas.
The needle fish looks great too. So many flies, so little time.
I would guess Lefty's Deceivers in green and blue backed would be my choices for all around best fly pattern.
