Los Barriles/Boca del Alamo/Los Planes, on the old road - Jan. 23, 2010

With the wind roiling the waters on both sides of the Pacific, and the monsoon to the north, I drove south from Loreto Friday and Saturday to La Paz, Cabo, and the East Cape. Both coming and going I passed through (near) Los Planes, taking the new road to San Antonio on the way down, and the old road through the mountains, Los Barriles/Boca del Alamo/Los Planes, on the return trip home. I had not been on the old road through to Los Planes since it was temporarily closed by Hurricane Marty in 2003 and was surprised at the good condition it is in. I would not suggest trying it in a 2 wheel drive vehicle, but with 4 wheel drive it was no problem at all. The trip from Los Barriles to Boca del Alamo on the coast road took about 45 minutes, and it took about the same time from Boca del Alamo on to Los Planes, with a few stops along the way. Attached are some photos of the old road between Los Barriles and Los Planes.

That furniture truck was on Hiway 1 at the turn off into Los Barriles today. Nice looking things.

Hi Bill,
What kind of truck are you in? I have a F350 crew, long bed, 4x4. The turns look a little tight in the mountains, think there is room? Sure does look like it would be worth the effort.

Frank......I drive a Tundra. There would be a few tight spots, but you could make it in your F350 crew, long bed.

Great stuff Bill - thank you. BTW did you stop at Hotel Punta Pescadero? It's an old favorite of mine and I am curious to know how they are doing.

Thanks again, ++Ken++

Ken......No, I didn't stop in. There were a couple of planes on the landing strip, and a big new house has sprouted up at the north end of the compound since I was last by.
