Gray Whales in Mag Bay - 2/2/10
Saturday and Sunday night I spent on the hook at Punta Belcher in Mag Bay inside the Entrada to San Carlos. On both days when I entered the Entrada
in the afternoon after searching in vain for wahoo and yellowfin, dozens of gray whales were congregated just inside in 90' of water. A half dozen
pangas were also on the scene with tourist whale watchers. I did not spend much time with them, but long enough to get these photos. As I was
putting my camera away Sunday after managing only some tail shots, a big gray emerged beside my boat standing on its tail with its head and 12' - 15'
of its body exposed. If it had a thumb I'm sure it would have been thumbing its nose at me.

Thanks Bill, Question: What is it like to be on the water with them when they are breeding? I've been 3 times to San Ignacio but, only after the
males are gone. I hear it can get pretty knarly.
Mean people suck!

Debra......If you know that they were breeding you know more about their habits than I do. Whatever they were doing, they were moving pretty slowly,
at least while on the surface. Maybe the erotic activity was taking place between breaths while they were under water away from the voyeuristic eyes
of the visiting primates.

Nice, very nice. I am surprised there are so many there already. We were out in San Ignacio last week and the whales have been arriving very late.
There were only about 80, but more were arriving every day.
Debra,
I have a picture of whales mating in San Ignacio I took last year. I will post it if I can find it. It quite a violent thing to watch and it takes
more than two.
Found one of the pictures and that thing is called a dork.
Forgive me Bill for posting an x rated pix on your beautiful thread.

Several years ago I learned from a US whale watch skipper that when the whales mate, it takes two males and one female...one male on the bottom to
hold up the female while the one on top does his thing!
BTW, nice photo of the dong, Diana.

oh my goodness Dianne...talk about caught in the act!!! Your um...explicit photo shows the moment of glory when the female rolls onto her back and the
dork finds the target...best whale sex photo I've ever seen!
Things do get very hairy when whales are in the heat of the moment and boats need to stay well away from all the thrashing around.
