organic produce in Baja - cleaning veggies
Anyone know where to buy organic produce in Baja? I know a lot of organic produce is grown in Baja and shipped to the US - but curious if anyone has
bought organic produce in Baja.
Also, I was talking to a friend who said he washed all of his veggies with grapefruit seed extract in Baja - 10 drops per gallon of purified water,
and soaked his veggies for about 10 minutes in this solution.
Said he never got sick from any of his produce when he did this - anyone have any other suggestions on eating fresh produce in Baja.
Planning to eat mostly canned/dried foods this trip, but may start craving some fresh produce after a few weeks.
thanks.

There's some farm out here that grows a variety of it for export and local consumers. If you think you'll be around Punta Banda, let me know and I'll
research a location for you.

There is an organic farmers market every Sat. from 9-3 just across the road from the Tropicana Jockey Club in San Jose del Cabo.

My feeling on the washing of vegetables is that if you do it in the states/canada then do it here. I have never washed mine here in anything but
bottled water and have never noticed any ill effects.

Hola sharktooth and welcome.
i have read there is a product sold at markets for this purpose. also, i have read to wash vegetables in a vinegar soak in the sink, like a couple of
tablespoons.
there is an organic farm in los cuevas-miraflores ( east cape ) area that is USDA certified. i know the owners personally and have seen their
documentation as to the validity of their organic produce and know their fussiness about their farms, processing and packaging.
the USDA does unannounced inspections of their entire facilities periodically.
the farms are called AGROVERDUGO and they do open market sales in los barriles.
they do also ship some of their products throughout MEXICO, to the U.S. and CANADA.
there are also farmers markets in san jose that sells organic but am unaware of any certifications.

This always reminds me of the day I was shopping at one of the markets in LA Bay and the shop keeper was spraying RAID on the fruits to keep the flies
off. Classic Mexico.

that is exactly why I am bringing my own food on this trip!
Just getting over being pretty sick for a few months - so can't risk eating Raid on this trip!
That's really amusing though!

Tooth, maybe you should pick another country for your vacation. I have seen many MO/camper vacationers here traveling up and down the peninsula with
all their food and beverage on board. They fear food like some people fear the drug violence. The truth is that those people are not really on
vacation at all. They are bubble boys. You won't get sick in Baja California if you just fly over it in a plane. What will you spend your hard earned
dollars on? How much of the place can you enjoy while highgrading your way thru the place cherrypicking things that look/smell/taste safe? There are
countless medications in the states for every conceivable intestinal condition and they all available down here. If you're sick now, put off the trip
til you are in better shape and think about what you will have to do to be satisfied.

I'm with you. I rinse mine just like I would anywhere. With tap water. I sure don't wash them, soak them, spray them with anything. I have eaten at
every restaurant, taco stand, hotdog cart, mystery meat cart and bought veggies at most every grocery store. Doesnt even cross my mind to get sick.
Maybe thats why I don't? I wish we had organic here in San Felipe cause I really prefer pesticide free but we don't so oh well.

Not knowing sharktooth's itinerary, but considering there's a good chance he going to pass through Ensenada, he should know that there are a number of
very reputable supermarkets there, many of which put some of their NOB competitors to shame. I dunno, but unless one is going to be camping the whole
way and has dry ice'd coolers full of food, I just don't understand why one wouldn't buy food in Baja.
That said, for Soulpatch- didja know that Henry's is a division of Smart& Final?

Hola shark and welcome.
i hope you are aware that you cannot bring produce or fruits into mexico from the UNITED STATES.
since the mad cow scare, i am not aware of what else is not allowed. beef, pork or chicken.
sometimes, it's at the whim of the customs inspectors and at other inspection areas, i guess it's up to what the inspectors wives would like to have
for dinner.
i've never had or heard of any problems at the local markets in los barriles as well as the bigger markets in san jose del cabo, cabo or la paz.
being paranoid in baja over such things could just diminish your experience of baja.

raid might turn me away - but only if i saw them spraying the produce. I'd probably blame the raid taste on the rinse water.

Soulpatch just set me straight on my wrong headed approach to helping a newcomer. First I'll apologize and then I'll tell you why I was kinda harsh. I
have lived down here in Baja Sur for 15 years now and have not been back to the states. That means I eat what I buy down here. Some of it is from the
states, some of it is from the world market and some is local. When and if I have problems with my stomach I take Treda, that's an
antibacterial/anti-diarrhea pill found in most stores. As for organic: most farmers down this way can plant, water, weed and harvest their crops but
hardly any of them can afford (so they don't use) pesticides and fertilizer. THEY ARE ALL ORGANIC FARMERS. Only now are some locals cashing in on the
O craze when that's what they have done naturally for a couple hundred years.
Once on the beach down here while I was camped, a van pulled in camped beside me. The next morning the driver told me he pulled in to be close to me
because he saw I was a gringo and he saw my machette by the fire. Ah a gringo, and he's armed! This will be a safe place. Then he told me he had in
the van everything he would need for 10 days, that he could not/would not go into any stores or restaurants because the Mexicans were looking funny at
him. He was from Fresno, about 30 years old. I just couldn't help wonder how in the world he was going to enjoy this special place and all the things
in it for 10 days OR a better question would be "why put yourself through the rigors of being that intentionally isolated?" Since then I have
encountered scores of such folks and my curiousity is understandable -- they take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but tire tracks and basura.
Unless Sharktooth has some over-riding health condition I was goading him into thinking outside the box, the van, the MO in which he will haul several
weeks of stuff he better not get caught with at the border --- what then of his trip if they strip him of all his stuff?
Come back Sharktooth, don't pay any attention to a crazy old man. Soul and thousands of others will come to your aid, make you feel more comfortable
about how/where you travel.
