Border Agent Suspected of Selling Uniforms

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/415041_border04.html

February 4, 2010
By LEVI PULKKINEN

FBI agents investigating a Craigslist Tijuana advertisement offering U.S. Border Patrol uniforms for sale have raided a Bellingham apartment belonging to a retired border agent.

In a search warrant affidavit filed Friday, investigators claim an Internet address linked to the Craigslist.org post was traced to the Bellingham home of the retired Border Patrol agent. An FBI agent claiming to be a customer then purchased the uniform from the man, who allegedly mailed the FBI uniform shirts, pants and a jacket bearing a Border Patrol badge patch.

Reviewing the 52-year-old former agent's work history, investigators learned the man retired in 2008 after 22 years with the service. His last station was in Lynden.

While retired agents are allowed to retain their uniforms, the clothing remains government property and cannot be sold, according to the affidavit.

Investigators contend the retired agent initially posted the items for sale on the Bellingham Craigslist section, appending a note chastising others not to flag his advertisement.

"If you don't like this ad, just buy the damn shirt and we'll both be done with this," the note read, according to the affidavit. "I'm retired and have lots of spare time to keep re-listing."

According to court documents, agents seized several computers from the home as well as four Border Patrol jackets. No charges are noted in court filings.

Why would a Mexican go all the way to the State of Washington to get a uniform?

How do you know? The report didn't say that.

Problem with this, Mr. Gull? Is it the word "allegedly"?

Wrong Sherlock. Allegedly, the posting was on Craig's list for TJ. Can you get Trichinosis from Craig's list?

The only thing I get from Craig's list is a feeling that I didn't spend enough time in school and have left myself in a position that I have to hunt for bargains.
I don't shop there.

There are several internet sites where you can buy all sorts of official looking uniforms and badges. Don't know whether they're actually "official" but they certainly look that way.
