Luis Colosio, Father of Assassinated Mexican Candidate, Dies

MEXICO CITY – Luis Colosio Fernandez, father of assassinated Mexican presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, has died, an Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, spokesman said. He was 86.

Colosio Fernandez died early Saturday at a hospital in Magdalena de Kino, a city in Sonora state, where he had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia since early last week, the PRI spokesman said.

The veteran politician will be buried next to his late son and daughter-in-law, Diana Laura Riojas.

Colosio Fernandez was born in Magdalena de Kino on March 2, 1923, and held a number of municipal and state posts in Sonora, El Universal newspaper reported.

PRI presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, according to the official version, was assassinated on March 23, 1994, in the Lomas Taurinas neighborhood of the border city of Tijuana by lone gunman Mario Aburto.

Colosio Fernandez, however, never accepted the official version of his son’s assassination.

The conclusions of the special prosecutors in the case have been questioned by others who allege that Luis Donaldo Colosio may have been killed as part of a power struggle in the PRI.

PRI president Beatriz Paredes, other party officials and friends plan to attend Colosio Fernandez’s funeral on Sunday.

Forgotten fact: Colosio Jr. visited La Paz the morning of the day he was killed. My next door neighbor's girl child presented him with flowers and I could've met him but I had to fly out that day. Back at work the next morning I got the dreary news he'd been assassinated. He seemed like a promising young guy and it's a pity he was cut down so early. "Transparencia" (in the running of government) was one of his big issues and that may've been what got him killed.
