Modify or start over?

In another thread I mentioned how disappointed I was with my Chevy Astro AWD on a simple trip to San Felipe. I'm not looking to do serious "off roading", just want to handle the roads in and out of camping spots and not get stuck. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 but it's straight stock. The upside is I know there is nothing wrong with the truck. The downside is I know I'd have to upgrade the rims, tires, shocks and possibly suspension to make a real Baja cruiser out of it. Plus it's a half ton so if I ever decided to buy a camper I'd have to upgrade anyway. Anything else to consider?

The question is; do I put $ into what I have or simply sell it off and go out and buy something more suitable? I was thinking about putting one of these soft tops on the Dodge too, any opinions?

Maybe there is a way to get all 4 wheels to lock and some fatter tires. If you like the Astro then there must be a way to set it up so it'll work. I googled it and found this: http://www.astrosafarivans.org/bb2/viewforum.php?f=21
may be of some help. Good luck....

Frontera I have a 04 RAM 4WD and i drove it stock for a long time in Baja including the infamous Gonzaga San Felipe road, and no problems, i did the 6" Fab tech Susp, lift and add it the 35" tires,a nd i love it. I think It will be scheaper to upgrade the 01 for Baja...
