Baja resident needs US car insurance to travel into US

We live full time in Todos Santos and are planning to drive out North, for the first time in four years. Our car is licensed in South Dakota... it has mexican insurance for its life here, but I need to acquire US insurance once I hit the border. I am heading to Oregon to set up a residency there, as our current residency is in Hawaii, which has become problematic. Any ideas on how and where to get car insurance????

Do you need full coverage or just liability?

You could also buy a US policy on-line and then just cancel it or let it lapse when you get back. If they have a monthly payment plan- just pay for the first month.

U.S. Auto Ins for non CA cars

I have been using: "C.Elena Bretts Paul" Agent for Seguros Insurance Services.

I use liability only, by the DAY.

The first day and set up fee for the policy is about $10.00, then it's only a dollar a day thereafter.

You pick up the policy at her place of business in Ensenada, which is hard to find the first time.

Since I only go to the "states" maybe 3 times a year it saves me a ton of dinero. Not good for CA registered cars however.

I have never filed a claim, so I don't have the info on adjustments.
