Mama Espinoza
Hi all,
Just returned from our annual fishing trip to BoLA and each year we stop at Mama Espinoza for Lobster Burrito and the last 2yrs this same time they
were out. We decided to give her another chance and were happy to hear lobster burrito were available. They were very good but very pricey@195pesos.
Overall service and food was good but they are definitely overpriced.
Homeward bound from BoLA we decided to stop at
Ed's "Baja's Best Restaurant" for machaca con webos and they were delicious. We enjoyed the owners hospitality and will definitely return. Also they
have Lobster Burritos for only 120pesos.
Sorry no pics but you know what the meal looks like

Lobster is no longer cheap, unfortunately, asian buyers come to baja and buy all the catch for very high prices, so lets get used to it.

Thanks for the update on El Rosario... What we noticed last year... Mama Espinoza's has greatly improved service and food selection... and Ed's place
totally remodeled, looks great and his food continues to be good at lower prices.
Mama Espinoza's (next door to Baja Cactus Motel):
Ed's ('Baja's Best B & B/ Restaurant', across hwy. from 'Turista Motel'):

Ed's Baja Best
Ed's Baja Best is the last restaurant on right as you leave El Rosario going south towards the bridge. It's a big bright Yellow building with a giant
Starbuck's Coffee sign painted on it. Ed's a great guy and I've eaten there many times.
Bon Appitite!

I know that some disagree, and that is OK, but we have tried Baja Bed and Breakfast a few times and will not return. There are better places in El
Rosario for your money with better food who serve you more that 2 tortillas with a breakfast and have salsa that is not made for gringos.
We liked Ed the times we met him and wish him well.
We also think that it is a shame that Mama's has become overpriced---food was good the last time we were there, but $10.50 for three taco dorados was
just too much. But the old good memories of that place are still with us.
Just our opinions----

DianaT,
I agree the salsa needs improving however tortillas were available for the asking.
Ed's coffee is probably Costco Starbuck fresh grind compared to the one down the street north which taste like NestCafe instant.
While traveling south, I want my meal to be simple, inexpensive and overall experience.
Ed has a wide screen TV and wireless internet, the back yard is grass and well groomed.
My spanglish is not to bueno and appreciate a conversation with someone from our homeland. While we miss Mama's racing heritage sometimes change is
for the better.
Happy traveling- bon appetite

You are correct. He will continue to appeal to many gringos headed south. And many really prefer places that are run by gringos, and that is also
OK.
We just very much prefer other places---so it is good, that there are choices.

Gringo food for gringo people. That is what he sells. Fred, you don't need great Spanish to get along. The spanish speaking natives of baja know
and expect that some tourists do not speak their language and adjust accordingly. Try ir. you will be pleasantly surprised!

| Am I the ONLY one who thinks it's a little weird to attempt to promote Mama Espinoza's
"greatly improved service and food selection" with a picture showing a totally empty restaurant....no customers, no servers
in sight?? Am I supposed to believe they served the masses & sold all that improved food selection & got 'em out the door that fast?

What is it about a particular salsa that makes it gringo friendly?

Mild, Mild, Mild---in so many places that cater to gringos, the salsa is very mild.
And yes, not all gringos want mild salsa.

Flavor?

I think you mean no 'heat'.
I would argue that any salsa in which one ingredient overpowers the whole to be bad salsa. I would have thought she meant a
Sonoran- style thick salsa. It's what most gringos think of as salsa. As typified by brands like Pace.
