Man (not) Killed Avoiding Secondary Inspection at San Ysidro POE Today

No links yet. A man was crossing north into the USA in lanes 22, 23 or 24 this morning. His truck was directed to Secondary inspection but he apparently decided not to go. (He likely tried to drive straight ahead into the three exit lanes.) They are reporting a dead male body on the ground about 50 feet inside the USA border. No one is saying what was in the truck yet.

[Edited to correct the guy wasn't dead)

I wonder why they didn't use the spikes that are in the exit lanes.

Man shot by officers at San Ysidro crossing
By Keith Darcé, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

Originally published April 17, 2010 at 11:56 a.m., updated April 17, 2010 at 1:01 p.m.

Federal officers shot a man this morning after he came through the San Ysidro border crossing from Mexico, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vince Bond said.

Though law enforcement officials in San Diego County wouldn’t say how seriously the man was injured, media outlets in Tijuana reported that he died.

The shooting occurred around 9 a.m., and involved two customs and border protection officers, Bond said. The incident was being investigated by the San Diego Police Department.

“I can’t really get into the circumstances,” Bond said.

San Diego police declined to comment on the investigation.

Mexican media outlets said the man was shot after he tried to dodge a secondary inspection while driving a Chevrolet Avalanche truck.

The port of entry at San Ysidro remained open but the west egress lanes on the northbound-side of the crossing were closed for the investigation, Bond said. Three other northbound lanes — lanes 22, 23 and 24 — near the area also were closed.

OH well
I guess when your sent to secondary you should go. You run when you have sometime to hide. Come from a family with lots of law enforcement.
look at all the money tax payer just saved. No free lawyers and no feeding and housing him.

There had to be some threat to others lives, or the perception of such, for the shooting to be legal and justifiable, at least under normal circumstances.

It is going to be interesting to see how this turns out. The San Diego Police (City cops) investigating an incident commited by Fed. cops is highly unusual (??). Normally the FBI is the investigating Agency.

More details are essential before anyone can come to a conclusion. Just consider if this guy was neither belligerent, nor brandishing a weapon. Then, consider this about the possibility that one among thousands, perhaps having had a few too many Tecates while headed North, develops an overwhelming anger at having to wait in line for two hours, and decides to hell with it and just heads for the exit. That person would be an ill-advised candidate to use as an example of border security. No doubt that the men and women in those booths have a difficult job. Let's just hope that what happened here had more provocation than just some guy deciding not to pull over. After all, they could have chased him down farther North.

what Irene said!!!! maybe the idiot would have killed your loved ones trying to evade the law "further North." i'll go onto a branch here and loudly proclaim the facts will point at the POS, not the CBP. BUT, whatever happens his DNA won't pollute the gene pool any longer....

Up to now, we have no idea why. What first occured to me when hearing the story was, I just hope the itchy trigger finger isn't becoming a tool of the trade. There are spikes in the road to stop vehicles.
The place has been going through some changes and they all seem so much more authoratarian than in the past.

SAN DIEGO – Federal officers shot and injured a man at the nation's busiest border crossing Saturday after he sped away from a gate agent and rammed a pickup while crossing into San Diego County from Mexico, authorities said.

The shooting by two U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents occurred about 8:50 a.m at the San Ysidro Point of Entry, said San Diego Police Lt. Kevin Rooney.

The man drove up to a gate in a Chevrolet Tahoe and told a customs inspector he didn't have any official identification. After offering some nonofficial documentation, the man was directed to a secondary inspection area.

Rooney said the driver accelerated up a departure lane, rammed a Ford pickup and crashed into concrete barriers as he tried to get into the northbound lanes of Interstate 5.

Agents on foot converged on the Tahoe and opened the door, trying to drag the driver out. The suspect drove in reverse, striking an agent with the Tahoe's open door. The agent fired at the driver as he sped backward. A second agent opened fire and the driver crashed into the barrier again and stopped, Rooney said.

The suspect suffered one gunshot wound and was hospitalized under guard, Rooney said. The injury was not considered life threatening.

The man was not identified. He was described as in his 50s. It was unclear if he'll be prosecuted federally or locally, Rooney said.

The truck he was driving was reported stolen in Colorado, Rooney said.

No agents were injured and nobody in the pickup was hurt, Rooney said.

The San Ysidro Point of Entry connects San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. About 40,000 vehicles cross into the United States at the port each day, and it has 24 northbound lanes.

Three of the lanes were briefly closed while police investigated.

"It is unclear if he'll be prosecuted federally or locally"

If dead, neither.

We all know these lanes. Once you get into one of the three exit lanes you have concrete barriers on both sides of you for about 25 yards. At the end of the lane is a big spike bar they pop-up to stop the whole lane. They must have hit the button to stop the lanes, and the guys truck rammed a stopped vehicle in front of him. He was trapped, just going back and forth with his door open in the same lane. So why shoot him- just step away on the other side of the barrier and laugh for awhile at his predicament? He was a rat in a trap.

Based on NoPreblema's last post, the shooting was entirely justified.
A vehicle is a deadly weapon.
