ATM FEES in ENSENADA

Nomads recently had a recent post about excessive ATM fees when withdrawing money at Mexican ATM's.
We used the a BANAMEX ATM in Ensenada this past weekend and all the fees we were charged were two separate $20.00 MN fees, which came out to a little over $3.00 U.S. This is (about the same) as any U.S. bank charges for a non-depositor fee.
I personally consider the fees very reasonable, especially considering that we were in a forein country.
ALSO, at this ATM, the screen directions were in both Spanish and English.:bounce:

Banamex is one of two banks that Bank of America had informed me to use that I would not incur large fees. The other one is Serfin Santander, but I think Banamex had the lower fee.

Many banks will not charge fees at all or waive them if you have "XXX" amount in your accounts. Wells Fargo is one of them.

That could be handy DurrellRobert, thanks for the tip! I'm usually in need of pesos, but I like to have a 'mix' depending on what's being asked for ;D

All the ATM's I've used for the past 11 years in the La Paz area give you a choice between USD or pesos....but BEWARE....the fees you get hit with to get USD are astronomical!!!:(:(

I've been drawing money out of ATM's in Baja for Years. At first there was no indicated charge for the withdrawals on my bank statement. Then they started to break the fees down and were charging me just under 1%
of the total as a fee with no breakdown as to which bank received how much. After reading your posts the atm now shows the amount the ATM is charging BUT the total on my bank statement is still the same with no increase. I think that they are just documenting the fees better than in the past. I always check the peso to dollar rate I receive when withdrawing and all appears to be the same as before. ;)

I think you have to add a few more "X"s to get to the no-fee threshold.

That HSBC facility is no longer there. The closest one I've found to that location is the HSBC in the Home Depot/Walmart Center in Ensenada... But the fees are 27.75 pesos plus an 11% IVA tax to boot! They also offer withdrawals in local currency or US $.

I also learned that some banks (Banamex for sure) will not accept US dollars for deposit. Deposits of cash must be in local currency. Also that they are now taxing deposits in excess of a certain amount per month with an IVA tax. Between Telcel and the banks... it's really becoming a challenge... And just wait a minute... as it will likely change and odds are, it will get worse!

I use HSBC ATM at Calimax, Maneadero for the convenience and recently noticed a charge by HSBC for the transaction....18.70 Pesos [around a dollar fifty today]. It's the same whether I withdraw 3000, 4000 Pesos or whatever. This charge comes up right on the screen and has nothing to do with what my bank in the states charges.
