Offshore Photos - Pta. Chivato - San Marcos - Seal Rock

San Marcos Island - Seal Rock - Jorge's Reef - The 210

Yesterday, we were officially in the Mulege Dorado tournament and while we fished hard, in reality we went 'boating' ...

...heading north from Mulege up the Sea of Cortez, past Pta. Chivato and ended up northeast of San Marcos Island. A distance of about 28 miles.

For those of you who may not know, Pta. Chivato is north a few miles from Mulege. San Marcos Island is just offshore of San Bruno, San Lucas Cove, and a few miles south of Santa Rosalia, BCS.

Here are some of the photos I took from the boat. Sorry, but it seems I downsized them a little too much. Hope you enjoy them anyway. The next time they'll be normal-sized, I promise.

Punta Chivato

The old hotel with the tall palms and surrounding homes.

Here is the old Casa Grande where I lived from 1978-81. Bill, Doc, & George....some of us recall those Baja characters..do you? Doc took excellent care of all the palms at the hotel and at Casa Grande...plus entertaining lassies with some wild tales.

A camper to the right...on the beach...solo.

Now deserted, the old camping beach..just below an old friend's home who left the scene many years ago.

At one time, I was interested in building a home on the point above the twin beaches below. Daydreamed a bit about it, then things just got lazier and lazier.plus I already had a place in the Bay. Oh well, it was too windy out there anyway!!

I have yet to see any of these lighthouses actually work for any length of time. (grin)
.
San Marcos Island

This is the southeastern tip of San Marcos Island..home of great diving and where I caught my biggest cabrilla..a nice 26lber. Pink MIrrolure..28ft down @ 7mph..over a 45ft bottom rock ledge. Aha..fish on!!..fish on!! I tell Co-pilot all the finer details of that day....extolling my prowness bringing the fish to the boat. How I ....wha..?

Hmmm.. The excitement of my story must have been too much for the poor gal.

Seal Rock and Jorge's Reef

There were at least 20 boats fishing the area by the time we arrived. Quite a few from San Bruno and San Lucas Cove...and 4-5 from Mulege.

You can see San Marcos Island and the adjoining seal rocks/lighthouse to the left. Good jurel fishing here, folks.

Boats of all types can fish these close-in waters..and effectively.

Well..that's about it. It's been a long day bouncing in some large waves...very large. No dorado to enter for the tournament..no 'other fish', like jurel, either. Some days are like that. It's all good.

Time to head home...there will be a next time.

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.
