The world Vigge

Jesuits and British pirates both agreed that the languages of the peninsular Indians were guttural--"as if their words are choking them," someone said.

So given this weird spelling, how do you suppose Vigge (meant "mountains" in Cochimi [I think] and ought to have an accent on the "e") was pronounced? I haven't a clue.

But there are two, AA. Is the other one soft? Or do two g's add up to one hard one? Or what?

Vigge

I think the second g would be soft or silent.

So why do you think this? (And I'm not being hostile, I'm just curious.)

Just a guess

It is a guess, but trying to pronounce it the way the natives did, it makes sense to me. And the way it made sense to the missionaries who transcribed the word.
