Time Driving to Abreojos
I am taking a trip with a few friends to surf at abreojos in late august, and wanted to split the drive into two days.
I was thinking of camping in El Socorro as my overnite, wanted to be able to surf both days rather than stopping in el rosario...
anyone have any thoughts on this itinerary? How long do you think it will take to get to el socorro from the border>? From el socorro to
Abreojos?

I would advise against camping at El Socorro. A buddy of mine - using it as his "stopover camp" - was robbed there not too long ago. Too visible from
the hwy. perhaps? Also, not really a good wave - kinda junky. Others might disagree. If you want to camp on the way down - rather than sleep at Baja
Cactus or somewhere else - I'd recommend Punta Baja. Very little chance of surfing, esp. in summer, but not a bad view in either direction, cool
lighthouse, and only 30. mins out of your way.
El Socorro from the border will run you around 5hrs.+, traffic depending. Try to get through Ensenada early.

Maybe it would be better to go for a surf on the way down up at k 38 or somewhere w/ a pay to park area for security, then just crash at el rosario
for the night?
also, how long from el rosario to abreojos?

ya, last time we tried to do that flipped the car south of guerrero negro. that was my only other time trying to surf in baja sur, so figured this
time it was best to split the drive up a bit....
anyone else have any suggestions for stop-overs on the way south?

Sorry to hear about troubles at El Socorro.
I would like to hear more, please.
From the border, it takes me about 4 hours, driving the speed limit, to get to Cuatro Casa. And these days I like to stop at Cuatro Casa and stay in
the hostel.
Ricardo is super mellow.
This way I do not have to unpack the car and camp. I can use the kitchen to cook.
I park in back, my stuff is safe and secure.
And Theresa can cook you a great breakfast in the morning.
If there is no waves, I hit after breakfast.
Or I stay a couple of days, surf, decompress, wait for the swell, get drunk, skate the pool, maybe some fishing, siesta naps, have a bon fire at
night, watch Padre's baseball on satelite TV or old surf movies down stairs, read a book, hang out on the upper deck, hang out on the cliff, and just
maybe, ask Ricardo to call Theresa, so she can bring us more booze and ice from town.

hmmmmm we live in la bocana, about 10 miles after abreojos and we do the drive south in one go. get a partner driver or 2 and split the driving up.
stopping for food and short rests, should get you to abreojos in 12 hours or less
on our way north, since traffic gets thicker and thicker as you get more and more tired, perhaps sleep in ensenada. that way, you have used your surf
time to the max
BTW the waves are huge today - surf's UP !!!

If you are camping or staying at Campo Rene, be prepared for plague like flies (screen tent and numerous flyswatters).
I have only seen them once (early August) in 5 trips, but they were like the book of Revelations. If you stay at Chelo's in town, there are far fewer
flies.

Was there last year in late August, and the whole beach, lineup, etc was full of dead jelly fish. Dont know if thats common or not...but it sorta
sucked. Still wore my fullsuit though cause the water was lower 60's... Was nice though, there was no one there. We surfed the point and the outer
reef/mysto spot north of town. Razors never broke correctly even though the beaches on the N side of town were well overhead.
I've also heard some bad things about El Socorro. Mostly robberies....
I personally just stay at El Rosario, at the Baja Cactus, or wherever you please. Its cheap, good food at Mama Espinoza's and your right back on the
road in no time.

I drive it in one day. Cross the border as early as possible and drive all the way in one day. Takes about 12 hours.

wow thanks for the great replies! I'm thinking I'm gonna try an cross as early as possible, sneak in a surf at either san miguel or k-38, then boogie
down to Catavina/ Santa Inez, wake up early and get to Abre in time for a late lunch and evening sesh... sound reasonable?
definitely stoked on the wealth of knowledge on this site, and much appreciate the responses.
wish i knew about this site last time i attempted baja... severely poorly planned trip that ended on day 1 with a totaled vehicle about an hour and a
half south of guerrero negro. (which is why i am trying to split up the drive this time)

btw, it looks on the map like there is a nice little point a just barely north of la bocana at abreojos, am i right about this or is it one of those
spots thats a lil more "hush hush"?

San Miguel needs a west or north west to break, anything more south than a 205 doesn't get in. Check out forecast site before you get on the road.
Just do the drive in a day and remember to get gas at the Vizcanio turn off. Going to San Igancio means going through the fruit and veggie inspection
bout ways just for gas. It take's away from surf time the first day in.
