More Radio Fishing
A good day for Radio Fish
Too hot to take the boat out (weatherman says “feels like” 116) and I had some Emails to catch up on, some other computer stuff so yesterday, while I
typed away, I went Radio Fishing.
There was no chatter on channel 65 when I first turned on my radio. I’m on a bluff, the antenna is on the roof so I can reach out past Punta Pescadero
to the north and way out to sea to the northeast.
Then I heard two gringo boats trolling straight out about nine miles. It was the typical boat talk about where are you, where you headed.
So I chimed in on Garfish. “Garfish, you got the Sandman here. What’s your 20?”
“Sandman, I’m about 10 off Punta Colorado.”
“Anything yet?”
“No, saw a jumper, had one zipout but I’ve only been trolling about an hour. Where are you? Doing any good?”
“I’m way east of you and whoa… Mike, Mike, get that in, get that in, hookup Garfish, gotta go.”
Then I answered a couple of Emails, keyed the mic. (panting) “Garfish, Sandman here. You still there?”
“Still here, come back.”
“Big tuna. I think. We think. It’s gonna be a while. (pant, pant) we got good 80 pound line, a 6.0 but he almost spooled us from the get go. He’s,
he’s big, if it’s a tuna, he’s big. Mike, I’m comin’ around, backupbackup, get back….” I clicked off.
Checked the weather, the daily peso, two Mexican newspapers. “Garfish, he’s pulling the boat now. It’s down to that. Can’t seem to gain anything on
him. He’s wearing out my old pal’s arms and back and legs. Aint he Mike? (giggle, giggle) Okay, okay, I’m turning, I’m turning now. Just hold what you
g……”
Time for some iced tea and a small bite of that sweet key lime pie in the fridge.
“Oh no, no, no, no. Garfish, he broke off. Probably 400 pounds of tuna. It’s still early so I’m gonna troll about 6 or 7 clicks past Frailes, then
turn and come right back through here, see if there’s more around. I’m the white panga with a blue toldo if you’re lookin’”
Then I had to quit radio fishing for the day and make that famous, almost frozen Bloody Mary. Always feels good to give the fishermen some excitement
in case they only catch schoolies or get skunked.

Reminds me of the Good 'ol Days in Cabo
Hillarious! We were always screwing with people back in the early days of Cabo. Especialy the Bozo's on 88 international (Duplex) not USA(Simplex). I
had a tweaked ham vhf that I could reverse duplex and comunicate with them. I would really get them going. Boredom leads to misbehavior with us ADD
victims.
That and when I would get on in a very official voice and start quoting Part 93 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. We were a small community of
American Sportfishermen and very tight. The VHF was our only form of communication. 88A for the Sportfishers and 22A for the Sailboaters. I was the
Marine Electronics Tech and always had a scanner going as to keep up with the goings on in the bay...

Yea, when the fish are not biting it's fun to get on the radio and describe all sorts of imaginary fish on the line, schooling, etc., and watch the
boats making moves.

MacyMan..are you by chance reading this in Mulege?...or are you wasted in the heat?
Remember the time I radioed you in your boat from the microandas tower hill south of Mulege? I was sitting in my Jeep using my handheld and drinking
beer. Somehow you got the idea I was out in my boat fishing...
Told you I was into the monster dorado of my life and you should get your butt over here..and over there..and then over here!...ha! I had you running
your panga over most of the Sea of Cortez.
Yup..fine times! Good wholesome times.
I have a new hi-tech antenna now..should reach almost anywhere. Make sure your tank is full, amigo.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

Udo..a older Digital 8' that is still very good, plus a Shakespeare 5225-XP. I put two of them on my boat this season, one on my Icom M504, and the
other on my Icom M422. I get good reception/transmission at 30+ miles at sea.
The Shakespeare was about $150 last year at West Marine, SD..but may be less now.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.
