Bringing in used bikes, surfboards, baseball equipment

We are planning on bringing down used bikes, surfboards, baseball equipment, etc. for Blanca's projects. Has anyone had any problems lately at San Ysidro with these type of items?

GEMcC5150 advised "Be careful with bikes currently only one per person. We have a bike program in San Ignacio and had to leave some at the border."

Any update would be appreciated to avoid hassles at the border.

All I can add to this is info that is almost 3 months old. I carry 2 bikes on the back of my motorhome and have never been asked about them...nor how many passengers I may have inside.

Also have carried all the items you mentioned over the course of time with no questions about those either. This may have all changed just lately. Rules are getting more...enforced...between Mexico and USA.

Not much help, am I?

I know that Blanca uses their cooperativo in Ensenada as a drop-off point for such items. My understanding is that it is easy to locate. If you're concerned about the number of items you're taking, perhaps you could contact her for the info and drop them in Ensenada for speedy delivery to La Bocana. That has worked well for friends of mine.

I agree check with Blanca. Last November and December we had over 160 bikes turned around.

If it looks like you are bringing more gear down than what the number of people in the vehicle would typically use, you might run into some hassles. I believe the Aduana guidelines state you can bring "two sports items" per person. This is definitely up to interpretation of the border agent though.

We got pulled into secondary once with two people and six bikes in back of pickup. Told Aduana that our friends were in another car ahead of us on the road.

Maybe try and schedule your trip on the weekend of the Rosarito/Ensenada bike race. Lots of folks with bikes crossing then. :saint:

I bring loads of gear each year for both personal use and for gifting.

There are really three possible scenarios:

1) you claim personal use as avid sportsmen with a big family who is flying in, honestly I have 40 immediate family members and they certainly are not driving down so it makes sense that I would carry our family items, in addition I have gifts for particular cousins in mexico. This makes sense to aduana.

2) you are part of an organization or school which requires the equipment for use, you are a teacher who must have tools. These are not being imported, they will be used in your function as a teacher wherever you are. This requires a teachers visa or something similar.

3) you are an individual and you are importing items for donation or gifts. You will pay an approximate %19 on the estimated value. For example 100 used bikes are worth $10 each =$1000 value X %19 = $200 or so. The cost is negotiable and usually reasonable so one could pay $100-200 for a fair importation for example.

caveat I often mention there are probably rats in the car cause my niece always sneaks them in, and that causes them to shut the door and walk away fast.

These are all totally fair and legal interpretations and represent the truth. If one of these approaches does not work, do not get upset with the agent, that will not help, just be patient and polite. The agent wants to work with you. You can also leave and come back later.

I was going to suggest this! They probably wouldn't even blink at a truck full of bikes that weekend.

We bring down bikes and surfboards for our local Bahia Asuncion teams and have had no problems. And we are always pulled over even if we get the red light and the bikes and boards are on top.

But we also say that we have a home in BCS which seems to always shorten any stop.

Good luck and your efforts and donations will be WELL utilized and appreciated.

@ GEM oooooooooooooooooooo !!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?? oh my gosh ... oh nooooooooooooooooo

@BajaJurel = you know we love you, right !!!!! Now, that being said, PER VEHICLE = no more than 3 or 4 bikes at the most. same with boards. or anything else. All clothes (if any) must be in suitcases. I had to pay for boogie boards the one time we brought 6 (for the tournament). It was not too expensive BUT my saying that they were for poor kids was for naught.

can't wait for you to get here next month :bounce::bounce::bounce:

just drive into secondary and PAY...

if people were bringing stuff north this way
you'd sure be on "the other side of the fence"

if it's staying in baja then import it
if not then don't

it's really easy

Ok OK We went to secondary and offered to pay the import and were told NO. We spent a lot of time trying to do everything right and were still sent back. At that time it was 1 bike per person and no extra parts. That make it real hard to run a free bike repair shop in San Ignacio when you cant bring down any parts. So for now we con olny fix bike for the kid here whit what we have and that is getting very thin. Anyone passing throught want to help with parts please fell free.
