trade surf fishing secrets

Hey woody
Pac. side. #1 carolina rig for fishing inside the breaks. Max 6# mono. If you can't get decent size sand crabs stack the small ones on the hook. I'm not sure how this is going to work Woody. I think you've got me out classed. I just talk a lot.

What's the deal on these teeny tiny sand crabs? I see people use them all day and dig for them with shovels at low tide. My dogs all love to eat them- but they seem awfully small to attract a fish of edible size. Most of the fish I see guys catch with them look like bait to catch a fish of edible size. What am I missing?

There can be some big critters in the surf Woooosh! I've never found 'em, but they are there! You are most likely seeing the surf perch along the beaches in and around Rosarito. Corvina, corbina, halibut, sharks, all roam the surf at times, some rather large. I've caught very nice calico bass and halibut from the rockier areas around La Mision, La Salina, Angel's Camp ect., but always struck out from the sand! It's a different art for sure.

it's counter-intuitive (word of the day!). the fish smell? the guts that the hook allows to leak out and don't give a rats arse about the size of the bait. they eat when the chance presents itself!

in the money! inches vs. weight?

edit: oh yeah. 25# test...... (that's mt secret! )

OK Woody. That' def edible. So it's about the smell- not the size of the bait? Didn't know that. The stacking on the hook idea is new to me but makes sense. I have been spincasting a lure from the beach because I can cast wicked far past the breakers with it. When the lure drags back in through the sand there are always a few tiny sandcrabs impaled on the hooks- but no fish... yet.

that fish (and his cousins) were caught 30 feet out, about even with my shoulders. tie an egg sinker above a swivel. tie 24" of line below the swivel and attach a #2ish hook. add a sand crab the size of your pinkie fingernail (or 3) and toss it out to where it's waist deep.

thank me later....

I fish light and close in. Some nice fish in ankle deep water. Same set up as woody. 1/2 oz egg sinker> swivel> 12"-18" 6# to 8# leader> # 2ish hook.
Secret # 2 ~ Look for and area where the white water kind peters out. That's a hole and may hold fish. Toss the bait, swimmy or lure up current and bring it in tight line. Don't give it up in knee deep water that's where you want to be.
I'm bumbed! I won't be back from Laguna until at least the 15th.
But I'll look forward to reading about the contest.

That would be good if I don't bring company back with me that would rather explore PC. That's really a big "if".
