Passport Renewal vs FM3 Renewal

When we obtained our first FM3, they required that the US Passport have at least one year before expiration. No problem. But....

Our current FM3 expires in June, 2011 and our Passports expire in March, 2012. So the Passports will not have a year left.

Today the Post Office told us we can only apply for a renewal of our Passports within two months of the expiration date.

And they said it takes from 4 to 6 weeks for the renewal, and we know from before, the old Passports have to be sent in with the request for renewal.

Two questions, please and Thanks

1. Has anyone renewed an FM3 with less than a year left on their passport?

2. Has anyone traveled in and out of Mexico during the time they were missing their Passport because of the renewal process?

I tell you what, passports are coming back MUCH faster now. Mayber fewer people traveling so fewer requiring passports ?? Not sure why, but passports are coming within 10 days....without expedite.

We always drive --- unless we are going to the mainland and sometimes we fly---but probably that won't happen for a while.

OK, Bob and Susan answered question 2----Thank you!:yes:

So now there is only number one left. :?:

Bump

Because I am sure someone can answer question number one.

1. Has anyone renewed an FM3 with less than a year left on their passport?

That will be our situation next year.

Thanks

Another option

A friends passport was either lost or stolen. He went to the consulate in TJ and was issued a new passport with a fresh issuance and expiration date. I don't know whether this is common practice or that the old passport was soon due for renewal. I do know that when I got a passport card the expiration date does not match the one on my passport.

My Passport and FM3 were both stolen. The Cunsulate in TJ issued replacement with new date in only 3 days. It took about 6 for INM to issue eplacement for FM3 but it also had new expiration date.
