Wreckage of small plane found in Mexico's Baja

By The Associated Press,

Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 7:14 p.m.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — Mexican authorities have sighted the wreckage of a small plane believed to have taken off from Los Angeles , California with four people on board.

The wreckage has been found in the mountains of Baja California near its apparent destination, the resort of Cabo San Lucas.

City civil defense director Francisco Cota Marquez says rescuers have seen the wreckage from the air, and are trying to reach the remote area.

The overflight Saturday did not spot any of the people aboard, and there was no immediate confirmation of their nationalities or names. They are believed to have been tourists.

Reports indicate the plane broke into two parts but did not apparently catch fire after hitting a mountain north of the resort.

Calif. plane with 4 aboard crashes in Mexico

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2010/09/26/...

September 26, 2010

Authorities say a twin-engine plane that apparently departed from San Diego with four people aboard crashed in the mountains of Baja California.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says rescuers are attempting to hike to the wreckage Sunday. The fate of the passengers is unknown.

A Mexican military helicopter spotted the wreckage of the Beechcraft Baron in steep and rugged terrain near Cabo San Lucas on Saturday. They were unable to land.

Mexican officials said they believe four people were aboard.

Gregor says the plane is thought to have departed from San Diego to Los Cabos, Mexico, en route to Argentina.

The FAA website says Douglas Baker of Ukiah, Calif. is the plane's registered owner, but Gregor says investigators believe Baker recently sold it. A phone number listed in his name was disconnected.

mike I used to do San Diego or Mexicali nonstop to Punta Pescadero pretty regularly in my 95-A55 Baron. Mexicali to Pescadero is about 630nm. At about 180 knots I would make it in under 4 hrs. I carried 136 gallons usable and burned about 25 gal/hr, so that gave me over an hour's reserve. On the way back we would hop over to La Paz, fuel up and clear customs, and then fly nonstop to Calexico. I don't know the numbers on the newer Barons but nonstop from the border to Los Cabos wasn't a problem in my old one.

Mike - I'm curious why they don't know more about who was on board - don't they have to list the names on flight plan, and check in when they cross the border? The plan should be registered as well. If they know it was headed to Argentina, they should know who was on board. Is it feasible to fly a plane like this to Argentina?

Next of kin needs to be notified first, should there be no survivors.

DHS knows who was on the plane.

no, you can't take a baron non stop to Argentina.

me thinks they were on a long pl,easure trip with a stop in cabo.

if that was a 55 with std tanks non stop to CSL would be a stretch if VFR and if you hit any winds you'd know it enroute and stop at loreto 1st.

no post crash fire even tho a break up. reads like a gas run out to me.

they'll protect the names as DK says until all are notified.
bad deal for all.
no sense in speculating could have been a dozen things at play.

Two citizens from Argentina died on the Baron 55, registration XXXXX. The airplane was just purchased and it was on a ferry trip to Argentina.

It was found 60 miles from La Paz, it impacted a mountain. Mexican Marines on a helicopter found the wreckage.
