Hummm.

It all sounds like my friends and neighbors (and ex wife -mother of the kiddies). "There's bloody rage in the streets down there". "You'll get kidnapped". "The water will make you insane with the runs"!

Been hearing this junk since my first trip to Mexico in 1973....

Recently my son said to me "I was thinking of coming down with the wife and kids for a visit, with all the bad press I've heard do you think it's safe?" I said sure it is and he said "OK, we'll be there for Thanksgiving".....

No issues, no worries, no headless bodies.....peace love and fish tacos....dt

Mood: Just waitin for baja

[*] posted on 10-13-2010 at 09:47 PM

While planning our family winter vacation, my first suggestion was for all of us to visit Baja. Other than me, no one in the family was interested due to all of the bad press and the potential of having to pass through some of the same areas that are plastered all over the news. I tried to point out that there are places within our own small county that I/we will not go due to the well armed Dope Growers. Also, I tried to point out that there are neighborhoods that I will not go into when we go to Disneyland. Sorry to say, I am taking all 12 of us and my money to Hawaii instead. I plan to visit Baja when I can, as I still love the people, the land and the culture that are not associated with the drug trade. JH :no:

It's kind of nice as deserted as it is in Baja, but I know it is hurting the locals that we are not down there spending our dinero!

I'm heading down in two weeks to pre-run the bottom half of the race course to La Paz. Then take my time coming back to do a little exploring and surf fishing. If you don't hear from me again you'll know it's bad down there and you need to stay away or I died having fun. If you hear from me again you'll know it's all OK.

That would be pretty neat but what if I am kidnapped by a beautiful Mexican lady and hell in a beach hut while she does bad things to me. If she found out she might really harm me and no tellin what that would mean.

My worst nightmare is losing my health and living/dying a long, lonely slow death in a hospital bed waiting for the Price is Right to come on and Sundays when my kids visit.

I would rather die on a Baja adventure. Adventure makes me feel very ALIVE!

There is so much Baja I plan to see.

I sure appreciate the information every shares.

Can relate to your worst nightmare... but, have turned off the TV.. after a number of years... one can not take the "repeat" level that is presented in the just "Godawful" programing one gets from DirectTV and others... never thought I would have to pay for commercial TV ... now I don't ...

Agree that one should get out and go, as Baja is and can be a lot of fun ..... but, keep an eye out.. as things are pretty hot near the border .. just the day before yesterday.. a Federal Army dude was hiding in a tree in camo with his rifle at the ready, near the house ... now that is something one doesn't get to see every day...

Glad that some have no fear, as it makes things a lot more fun... when down in the Baja...

Think overall those further south have much "lower risk", except if you're flying in a plane, which may have practical application in the export business ....

Have a good one, keep your eyes wide, and don't take any wooden peso's.....

Wesson is right on. The further south you go, the safer it is. About 200 miles south of San Lucas, you will be so safe you'll long for something dicey to drift by your raft.

For the past year, first place stayed, rental two weeks in La Mision, 12 months El Pescador which is 9 miles south of Rosarito.. At the 4 way stop with the OXXO before you get to the Lobster Village..

I have been watching for entire time I have been down here.. people and drugs being moved up the coast from Ensenada.. which is a deep water port, DUH!!! with air landings occurring to the south of Ensenada...

In El Pescador.. they have been coming in over the past year in a troop truck.. they park.. everyone gets out.. about a platoon, with armor, extra ammo, they are locked and loaded... with a Humvee up above about 300 yards with a 50 cal located to give supporting fire.. they were military operations...

A few months back, they finally busted the "people smuggling" operations and the movement of pot of the coast (total of two busts one 650 kg, the other 1250 kg) which had been on going ..... beach access with a fishing operation next door for the "Lobster Village".. with 6-8 boats going out to check "traps" daily...and a road to the boats which a pickup or van could drive to from the "lobster village"... DUH!!

As for the guy in the tree, it's about the only tree left... they have all had their branches cut back to where they are only crows left... palms were left along.. but anything that obstructed vision or could be used to hide and/or store was taken care of ...

There are not multiple "visits" by military and the police in daylight and at night...

I don't think this guy will use the tree again.. scared the hell out of some of the folks... does kinda "jump out at ya" if you know what I mean.. talking a walk near the beach.. and you got a in a tree with a load rifle, radio.... ya it just kinda takes the romance out of it... me I don't care.. will not give his position away...

I don't see nothing, say nothing or talk about nothing... everything I have posted here is a lie... and Baja is just fun as hell... however.. I don't feel bad about all the slow business, me I'm selfish .... I like it with less people.. and I like the "no roads" folks here ..... agree 100% ... sorry ... but, make it hard .... not easy..

It has changed too much... it's still Mexico.. but, the increase in population by the "good roads" ... guess it's just progress...

Have to say, I will still have the memories of Baja of years and years ago.. and that will have to be it... but, that is ok... it was and still is a very interesting place just a few miles for some of us lucky ones that live in Southern California...

Just renewed my insurance for the car in Mexico for another year, the SENTI is good for another four years.. hell its all good..

Only wish I could get down to Mulege, Loreto and La Paz... the pictures you folks put up... its hard to take... OK... looks like such fun you get to have down there...

Don't know what I would do if no Russ and his just wonderful pictures every morning.. and many, many others... there are too many to list that put of pictures of their trips and fish and... all...

Thanks to ya all....

the tree, he just climbed it like any young man would ... with is arms, and legs... didn't see him get up... maybe someone tossed him his rifle after... but would think he should be able to climb a tree with his rifle slung.. wouldn't you... he is a solider after all...
