Help with class 5 off road question
Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on how much money would you need to own, race, mantain a car similar to this per year if you race it half a
dozen times in baja?

Class 5 is unlimited Baja Bugs and Class 5-1600 is a Baja Bug with a max engine size of 1600cc (VW air cooled).
The photo above is a Class 1 (unlimited singe or two seat).
The 5-1600 is more economical having limitations on the mods and engine.
Even more economical is the Class 11 (pure stock VW beetle)...
I recommend the forums at SCORE-International.com as well as Race-Dezert.com and perhaps others that are geared to off road racing for more
information.

Vehicle Description

Class Requirements
Engine
Any manufacturer air-cooled, 4 cylinder, single cam, push rod, VW concept engine is allowed. VW 4 cylinder water cooled engines may also be used.
Displacement is unlimited.
Suspension
Front and rear suspension systems may be modified or replaced as long as stock concept is retained and wheel base limit is not exceeded.
Body
Vehicles must have an external appearance of a Baja Bug. Wheel base may be increase but not exceed 105" front to rear centerline.

Send "Bajabird" a U2.. He has a class 5 that he races out of Loreto.. Would be able to answer all your questions..
He is headed to Loreto this week to get in some pre-running for the upcoming BK1 between Loreto and La Paz..

The entry fees are the least of your costs. spares, fuel, chase vehicles, housing food etc will run much more

A good web site for classes and costs is:
http://www.desertrides.com/reference/racing_classes.php , it is a little dated but gives a good overview.
The picture is of a class 1 car, the link is an unlimited class 5. Cars numbered from 500 to 549 are open and 550 and up are limited in suspension
and motor, but both are based on a VW.
In BCS the biggest cost now is racing fuel which is $180 pesos per gallon and a 5/1600 with a high compression race motor will get about 8 or 9 miles
per gallon. The entry fees are $3,000 pesos per race for a 5/1600. A The local series web sites are - probaja - http://www.probajaonline.com/ and AEABCS - http://www.aeabcs.mx/ .
If you are interested in BCS races, there is a race at the Monroy Race track(Near San Pedro, just south of La Paz) this Sunday.
We will be racing a sportsman class around 10:00 AM -- #1515, if you are there stop by.

Jesse buying the car can run from $20,000 to $80,000 depending on the condition it is in. Servicing the car depends on what was broken at the last
race. Some racers replace things just for the heck of it to make sure the car is in tip top condition each race. For long races like the Baja 1000 the
engine should be fully rebuilt. You'll need lots of tires. Some things you can get at a discount or free from the various manufactures ands supply
houses.
I would say you'll need an average of $5,000 to $10,000 per race. So on the cheap or low end it would cost you $50,000 per year and on the high end
$140,000 per year.
If you stay with a class 5/1600 your at the lower end. If you get into the bigger classes the cost goes up. For a low budget I'd recommend class 11.
Still lots of fun and easier on the pocket book.
As they say if your into racing and you want to be a millionaire start with two million and you'll become a millionaire real quick.

The budget for a 5/1600, if you do some wrench pulling yourself, will be $20,000 to $25,000 per year, class 9 a little less and 11 less again. That is
racing 10 races a year at the club level in BCS. Racing northern Baja and Score will be more but only 5 races.

Jesse as you can see the cost can be all over the place depending on the vehicle and what you want done to it. The low budget guys do a lot if not all
the work themselves. The high budget guys have others do the work for them. And others somewhere in between. Part of it depends on whether you want to
win championships or just have fun racing. I raced motorcycles in SCORE for several years mostly to have fun and get the experience. I spent 10,000 to
15,000 a year on racing. In the early 90s I got serious about racing and sponsored a race team. Lots of work getting other sponsors, working with the
parts and apparell dealers etc. prerunning, buying two new bikes per year. Making sure everything was right. The boys worked their butts off too in
all of the above. Won a lot of races including two SCORE championships and several Baja Promotion championships. It cost us $75,000 a year in bike
prep, parts , and service, entry fees etc. Total winnings were maybe $5,000 year. one of the boys earned a factory ride with Kawasaki out of it. I
would do it all over again in a minute
