Direct TV vs. Dish in Northern Baja, CA?
Dear Northern Baja, CA Nomads: Can anyone tell me if Dish satellite TV works as well as Direct TV in your area? I ask because it seems that everyone
in the area who has satellite uses Direct TV. This could be because Direct TV was less expensive, in the past, but that is not presently the case.

We have DishNetwork below San Felipe and it works very well. This receiver is a piggy back to our home subscription so it is only $5 on top of our
home bill. We even get the local San Diego news (one channel, XETV 6) and all of our HBO package plus all the XM music channels.
The reception is great and have never had a problem in two years.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

People here have had their cards zapped, I mean, all at the same time, when Dish found out they were here.
Doesn't happen with Direct.

My DishNetwork is legal and I have even talked to Customer service and they do know that one of our receivers is in Baja.

we were cut off by dishnetwork here south of Rosarito...so I signed up with Telnor Dish...as we are Spanish speaking gringos..It's no problem...and
cheap...$12.00 per month for basic...

Hi, Baja Warrior. I suspect that your Baja service may not actually be legal but that you just were not busted for it. Can you tell me how you went
about hooking up in Baja, and what you told/did not tell Dish??

I have both Dish and Directv in Northern Baja and both work flawlessly. Never had an issue with either one. And, I don't intend to inform either
company of their receivers locations.

We use SKY which we are really happy with. Depends a lot on what channels you just "have to have"...

We signed up for DishNetwork in San Diego while telling the original salesman that we needed service as well at our vacation home in Baja which he
said no problem.
Two weeks later we had a couple of guys crawling all over our house in San Diego getting us hooked up and handed me a receiver and a dish for Baja.
The installer even gave me marks on the dish to get me close and brought up the dish pointing menu on the TV to show me how to dial it in.
We had to call customer service once the dish pointing was complete as they had to verify the receiver and send a signal which did take a while but I
made a point of letting my representative that we were in Baja and there was no problem. It will be 3 years in March since we had service with 0
problems, no customer service calls.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

yep, I had 3 receivers zapped at the same time because somehow or another they determined that they were not at US address I used. When I talked to
them about this they told me that if I sent them a utility bill with my name on it for that address they would hook me back up, and of course I
couldn't do this.
Also asked them how they could destroy my personal property that I bought and paid for and they said that I owned the equipment but that they owned
the access cards within, which is all that they destroyed.
So those 3 went into the dumpster and I bought 3 more using a different name and address but they ony lasted about 2 months befre they were also
zapped.
During this time frame I know of at least another 15 receivers in this area that were zapped. I'm told that the reason they are willing to lose
customers down here is that the US FCC regulations say that they can not brodcast outside of the country.

Check out SLINGBOX.com Anywhere you can get on the internet you can watch the same programming that you have in your livingroom, including HD.
Cost of the box is $200-300. Easy set up and no monthly fee.
They even have a version for smart phones.

Direct TV people are you using the 18" or 21" dish? Or do need some thing bigger? Does the HD & DVR work?

At this point, I have to have lots of (most) channels in Ingles. I imagine that's not the case for ustedes.

Thanks for the info, Bob. One of my questions was: is there any reason to think it would happen again soon? You answered that one! Guess I'll
have to explore alternatives to satellite TV. : {

I don't understand how SKY does things. There are antennas everywhere and they all seem to be pointing at the ground.

Thanks for the info, Rachel.  Someone was just telling me last night that
these internet sites, with movies & TV, are becoming more and more common.
I hope I can get fast enough internet to enable me to use these sites!
Edit: Oh, dear. I checked out the web site. It looks to me like one must have regular TV reception at their home, first. My only home will be in
Baja.  Still, I'm fairly sure there are sites that just provide TV
and movie content directly. I guess even Netflicks does that with movies.

not that the extra $5/month charged by Direct TV bothers me so much; it's that, at least right now, they require a 2-year contract (as opposed to
Dish's 1-year contract), and that's too long for me. Guess I'll have to explore alternatives to satellite TV. : { |
It's a pretty much given that you need to have established service in the U.S. first. If you have a friend or relative with service then an
additional box will do the trick.
