HWY 1 Bridge Construction

Just got back from La Paz and there are several places where major bridge construction is underway. Between Mulege and Santa Rosalia there are several bridges being built and these are not small projects but very big ones covering long distances. A paved road is along side for the traveler to drive on. Also a very long section between Santa Rosalia and San Ignacio. The bridge just outside El Rosario construction continues, to be completed soon, I think. All of these are major projects and looks like they would withstand a 100 year flood.

Also the hwy continues to be widened and improved in many places including north of Uruapan toward Maneadero and hwy 3 toward Tecate. There is about 8 or 9 miles maybe more paved leaving San Ignacio toward the Lagoon. Won't be long before you can drive a family car down to watch the whales. I found it interesting that the hwy to San Juanico is far to the west of La Purisima. It will connect south of La Purisima.

10 miles south of San Juanico the 1000 course uses the old hwy to La Purisima.

If I remember correctly, there were a few miles paved out from San Ignacio like three years ago. Doesn't sound like it is a priority.

Maybe not, I had not been on it for several years until April. They have crews out there working then and now. It just must be slow or not a large crew. I think the grading crew is at or near El Alamo which is about 5 miles past the pavement.

It was my understanding that the road we're discussing is to eventually be paved through, to, near, San Juanico, La Purisma and hooking back up with Mex 1 at Cd. Insugentes, offering an alternative for those headed South to La Paz and beyond. I can't believe that the folks in places like Mulege and Loreto would be very happy about the possible diversion of a good deal of traffic/ customers.

They probably don't like it and maybe thats why it's going so slow. I do think if they get the road paved to the Lagoon it would be a boost for San Ignacio and the Lagoon encampment for people coming to see and pet the whales.

Juan del Rio posted this map of the new highway route south from San Juanico, a couple years ago:

If plotted on the '03 Almanac map:

Can't disagree there. We've been to the lagoon a few times. Also gone to Ojo de Liebre several times, both by driving to the Ejido dock and by being shuttled from a GN hotel. Being able to drive out to San Ignacio lagoon without trashing the car would be a big incentive; not to mention a time saver. Because, even though it sounds like unsupported hype, we have found more and better close encounters with the San Ignacio whales.

With only 2 days and 1 night you should go to Ensenada by the toll road. Over night and return on hwy 3 thru wine country to Tecate.
