Gotta Peso? Catavina 2010

Hey, who's that up ahead??

Why..it's the one and only famous Catavina Cal...fondly known here as...

..."Gotta Peso?"

Well, did you give him one?

I see he is dressed for the season. It must be getting cold in Catavina these nights.

We will look for him in Dec. when we pass through on our way to Bahia, and be sure to offer him a cold soda and listen to his chit chat for a few minutes before we have to cut him off, letting him know that we have to be on our way.

I wish I really knew his "story". Not the strawberry fields/Elvis/ Marilyn Monroe tales that he has to tell, but the real story of who "Gotta Peso" is or Andy Hurr as he likes to call himself.

Thanks Pompano for posting recent photos of Andy. He wasn't there when I passed through back in August.

Hi Paulina...

Yeah, I always give him something. Sometimes a soda and sammy, too, while he spins his latest 'My life's history' version for the tourists.

He really is one the best entertainments to be found on the Baja Road.

And he is a steady and reliable fixture...I've seen him every time I have passed by Catavina for the last 2 years now. Maybe 8 times altogether. He owns that concrete bulwark by now!

He has seen these photos I post of him on Nomads..and I did get a little actual history from him on this last trip north, but will leave that for him to reveal...or give me the go-ahead.

All part of the Baja Road Experience..and all good.

Gotta is one of those guys who will be found dead in his cot with three million bucks stuffed in his mattress.
I hope, anyway.

We love his stories....from inventing Campbell's soup to staring in Tarzan....to his mansions in Brazil and who knows where....he's definitely a character...and he can tell you 2.5 million stories in 2.5 minutes :) He doesn't like dogs, though....so if you aren't in the mood for his stories....just tell you have big dogs in the back of your ride!

how bizarre - I have never seen him in the hundreds of times we have stopped in Catavina for ice cream .... must be the dog in Les that keeps him away :biggrin::biggrin:

I always stop and give him something. He knows now I don't need any stories. Last year he asked for a can of raviolis. So on our way North in Jan I had Just that for him!

Just wondering why Mexican immigration hasn't picked him up in all these years? Unless they think he is good for the local economy??? LOL

I missed Gotta Peso the last two trips through Catavina....I think he was attending a 'Tarzan the Ape Man' cast reunion.

I never feel okay handing him money without a yarn or story. We listen and visit. or vice versa. His stories are his product ...he created his own rice bowl. I think we both feel better...I know I do.

Igor is right, we're gonna miss Gotta Peso/Catavina Cal very much one of these trips...he's becoming a Baja Road legend, much like Carmelita, Sylvia, Nails, and many other Olde Road characters.

...if Baja types like these are completely gone one day...then so is Baja.

....IN MY HUMBLE OPINION... %&#! those damn abbrevations!...:D

I suppose he will fade away someday, and if I'm not observant it will be like Carmelita at Jesus Maria, I won't know until long after he is gone.

Anyone know if he has a tent or does he just sleep in that thick jacket in the dirt?

No disrespect. Just wondering....

He probably has a sick motor home at ynez.

If not I gotta a couple of tents I could drop off.

Like I said, just wondering.

Ateo

I think that's a very noble gesture but I think fruitless however because he knows where the traffic is is where he will survive.

There are grumblings amongst the locals as to why he is allowed to continue . Matilda at inez rhetorically made the comment once why if the US has anti mex immigration rules that why is he allowed to carry on as he does. I sense he is unfortunately not only a source of irritation and frustration for the locals but a mild embarrassment.

Catavina has been tolerant thus far , I hope it lasts for his sake.

He's actually a very humble and delicate person.

Help him in whatever manner one can,

I just put it in perspective that it's a paradise as compared to a street corner with a cardboard sign anywhere in San Diego County.

Someone needs to adopt him

Are you serious??? Panhandling gringo in Mexico not there illegally? He returns before his FMM expires each 180 days or he is there on an FM-3? Always returns to Cataviņa to vacation?

OK sure, just a crazy outburst by that nutty David K again:lol:
