possible new record yellowfin tuna
shaun dawg, old OB surfer, now KFMB weatherman just did a story of the Vagabond fishing vessel, fishing 700 miles south hauling in a monster fish.
they can't verify the weight until they get to a USGFA scale but according to "conservative" measurements, it is a potential new record. it was caught
on 100# line.....
details forthcoming, i'm sure!

The fish. according to the length/girth formula tapes out at 390lbs, could go either way on the scale. I hope it's the first 400+.
As far as an IGFA record, most of the guys on the LR boats lay the rod on the rail which disqualifies the fish.
The Vagabond arrives Point Loma on monday am.

Thanks much Alan and Sweetwater. Alan, I don't have any interest in selling my photos, I get a lot of ego gratification out of hearing comments like
yours and that's enough for me. Years ago I did a lot of work for a dive magazine (Dive Training) including photos and travel articles that I
co-wrote with my daughter Coleen and we got paid for that but even that was more of a personal thing. It was fun working with my daughter and we both
liked the magazine staff very much. I really enjoy posting stuff here when it's appropriate and, like I say, I really enjoy the comments.

700 miles south from SD must be the Alijos rocks, went on a long range years ago there and the fishing was phenominal.

An ichthyologist I met on the Excel some years ago who was tagging yellowfin and bluefin tuna told me that all the 300 pound plus fish are females.
He explained that only the females have the energy to eat enough to sustain that enormous growth. Amazing.

New yellowfin tuna all-tackle world record confirmed

The International Game Fish Assn. has confirmed a 405-pound yellowfin tuna caught by angler Mike Livingston last November as the new species
all-tackle world record.
Landed during a 10-day fishing expedition aboard the Point Loma Sportfishing vessel Vagabond, the catch replaces a record held since April, 1977, by
Curt Wiesenhutter, who caught a 388-pound, 12-ounce specimen off Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands.
"When the scale hit that number it was like the Super Bowl here," Livingston, 63, a retired school administrator from Sunland, Calif., told Pete
Thomas Outdoors in reference to cheers from a crowd of nearly 200 that gathered to witness last year's weigh-in at the San Diego-based landing.
Livingston's fish, which measured 85.75 inches from nose to tail and had a girth of 61.5 inches, took almost three hours to land and was caught west
of Magdalena Bay on the southern Baja California peninsula.

Monterey Bay Aquarium has a tuna tank with some that seem to be that size. You can sit in the 'balcony' and watch them glide in the blue silence. They
truly are impressive and really are the Aquarium's main attraction.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a world class facility! It's an amazing place to visit and it's worth a trip to the Monterey/Carmel area just to see it.
If you are ever in that area of the coast, DON'T MISS IT!
Mike's Tuna is one big fish...the old record stood for years and was the goal of thousands before him to break!
