Lowrance GPS?
thinking about pulling the trigger on the Lowrance Baja GPS (specifically, the Elite 5M). Curious if anyone here has had any experience with it, good
or bad. I'll mostly be using it to navigate remote roads in Central Baja (often goat trails) and am wondering if the maps are as good/better than
Almanac maps. Also curious if non-Baja maps can be added to it, any other thoughts/suggestions, etc.

why the electronic navigation? That's weak. You've got one of the best co-pilots in the business. Rain, shine or cover of night, I hear he's

I would first consult with DavidK before getting anything that has to do with moving around and finding your way through Baja.
David's information is as good as any Baja Almanac you'll ever see!

Lowrance
I have the Lowrance Baja540c (several years old by now) and for me at least, the learning curve was and still is a bit steep. I do not know what Baja
map is available for the model you are interested in, but the one for the 540 is pretty darned good. I feel it compares quite well with the Almanac
and have been pleased with the level of detail it provides as all routes I've driven and others that I am interested in are shown.
I've been happy with it.
The USA map that I have for it, MapCreate 7, also has wonderful detail.

Re Lowrance - I've done a good bit of course marking for SCORE races in Baja. Almost all race and chase vehicles use Lowrance. They are rugged. The
maps in our prerunner are quite good. The comment that Lowrances are not the easiest to use is true. I have a lot of experience with marine
navigation devices, going back past SatCom - the Lowrance is like all of them!
Re Garmin Nuvi maps - In my own truck I have a 3"Nuvi for city driving and a 7"StreetPilot for off road, particularly in Baja. The little Nuvi is
just too small to read at speed. I have the Mexican GPS Atlas, from BiciMapas on the Garmins - great maps for everywhere I've been in baja and they
give good support. There are still some StreetPilot 7200s around at deep discounts, if you want a BIG screen GPS.
