Players Barred From Visiting Mexico

EL PASO, Texas (AP)

Players from Notre Dame and Miami will not be allowed to cross the border into one of Mexico's most dangerous cities during their free time before the Sun Bowl.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly took his team's passports before the Fighting Irish flew to El Paso as a precaution. The Hurricanes didn't bring passports, either, and met with both local law enforcement and the FBI on Sunday shortly after arriving in Texas to further underscore the potential dangers of crossing the border.

Fans from both schools have also been urged to be cautious. El Paso borders the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, which is wrapped in a drug war. Officials say more than 3,000 people have been killed there this year alone, and the vast majority of crimes in the city are never investigated.

The Sun Bowl is Friday.

If these college students have to be forced to do what any average third grader would do, it's shameful. Anyway.....I wonder how many Baptists are playing for Notre Dame? :o

If I were the coach, I would not want my players partying it up in Juarez (or any other place) the night before the big game.

With heavy rains predicted for Wednesday into Thursday, they are better off steering clear. TJ ain't pretty in the rain, and neither are the beaches north or south of the border. Think of all the skin rashes prevented.

they are probably more likely to get mugged, robbed, or worse in El Paso. the cartels avoid all contact with players
