details for selling a small boat in Baja(??)

hi there,I'm new to this forum, not sure if this is the right section,,
....I'm taking a small (Laser)sailboat to use on my vacation in baja next month(feb2011),,but plan to be purchasing another boat in san diego on my way home, and need the roofspace...ssoooo,,, I'm wondering about selling a small (laser) sailboat during my visit to baja .
....is this a difficult,silly plan,,or do-able?

....I'm familiar that the border requires registration of 'toys' like this,,,,is there a 'duty' to pay or something,,,how do they establish the amount?......the boat is worth ~$2000
.....thanks for any information or ideas!

they don't care. they think you will bring it home. if you can find someone to buy it, sell it.

it's the same with your car. they don't make you pay duty.

If you do get the red light at crossing show the registration not the Title and yes they will only assume you will be bringing it back to the U.S.

Are you trailering it all the way just to sell it in Baja?

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

you need insurance and the tourist visa.

look for the Misc for sale or whatever. not sure. check back every day or two and reply to your posting. that will keep it near the top.

hi there...you can probably unload your Laser in places like BOLA, Mulege or Chivato where someone might want one...and has cash. I bought a cool little Sunfish but it's hard to use here getting out and back through the surf. You might not get your full price for it though but should be able to sell it.

Competely doable...or is that spelled do-able? Either way looks funny to me, but then I am drinking WAY TOO MUCH COFFEE this morning...

Put it on Baja Sur craigslist. Sold my boat that way and had a surprising amount of response.

lasers are great fun - you should be able to easily find someone who wants to buy it, focus on selling it in vacation communities. due to your time limits, you may not get top dollar, but who knows.

what kind of boat are you buying on return?

where are you planning to sail your laser in baja?

wow,thanks for all the responses!
....so it's a bad idea to have a for-sale sign on the boat??
,,,though there's already interested enquiries coming from this site(!!)

...I'm planning on getting a 29er sailboat in San Diego,,but it's not ready until my trip back north.
