A 1,000-mile bike ride next month between Rosarito Beach and Cabo San Lucas is being promoted as a fundraiser for children's charities along the way. Organizers are counting on another benefit: delivering the message that traveling to Baja California can be safe.

“We’re trying to improve the perception of Baja,” said Bill Spradlin, one of two U.S. citizens living in San Felipe who are organizing the ride.

The 16-day Baja Love Ride is scheduled from Feb. 14 to March 1. The event’s promoters say participants can sign up for a five-mile stretch, a day-long ride or the entire journey.

The ride’s overnight stops include Ensenada. San Felipe, Guerrero Negro, Mulege, Loreto, La Paz and Todos Santos. The organizers are hoping to raise money through sponsors for the individual riders.

The event has three main beneficiaries so far: The Rosarito Beach branch of the Boys and Girls Club, the Casa de Fé orphanage in San Felipe and Hogar del Niño, an orphanage in Todos Santos. Organizers are hoping to include at least five more organizations.

Spradlin is a custom home builder from San Diego who moved to Mexico seven years ago. Last year, he opened the community’s first orphanage with his wife, Carol.

The other key organizer is John Pack, originally from Santa Barbara, who has been living in San Felipe for six years. He and his wife, Rachel, publish a magazine about Baja California and sell auto insurance for the peninsula.

The Packs and Spradlins have been enlisting the support of riding clubs on both sides of the border and Mexican tourism officials. “The overall feedback has been incredible,” Pack said.

The group’s website is bajaloveride.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

San Felipe, BC, Mexico - January 17, 2011 -

The Baja Love Ride, a “ride for a cause”, is forced to change the start date and ride route. The date is being changed from February 14 to March 22. Originally set to begin in Rosarito Beach, the ride will now begin at Monumental Plaza in Tijuana.

Due to unforeseen events, the organizers have had to modify the original planned event. The previously promoted 1000 mile course from Rosarito to Cabo San Lucas has had be shortened considerably. The 2011 ride will now be a 217 mile (349 km) course from Monumental Plaza in Playas de Tijuana to the Aches of San Felipe.

Organizers have recently been told by the government that road damage south of Puertecitos and construction south of the new Highway 5 will make the roads impassable for buses and other large event vehicles.

Authorities contend Federal Highway 5 construction south to Bahia San Luis Gonzaga and west to Transpeninsular Highway 1 will indeed be completed by the time Baja Love Ride 2012 is slated to begin.

Riders can participate in the 217-mile ride for only $200, which includes round-trip transports, meals, and camping. The single day ride and overnight camping portion cost $45 to enter. The community “Good Start Rides” set to place in each community will cost $25 to enter.

As a bonus gift, all Baja Love Ride riders will receive a FREE ticket to the San Felipe Blues & Arts Fiesta on March 26th, Baja’s biggest charity music and art festival (www.bluesandarts.com).

The Baja Love Ride hopes to draw a huge number of participants and donations. The donations will go to the local children’s orphanages and charities along the route. Organizers also hope the ride will become an annual event that paints Baja in a positive light.

Too hilarious! Gringos in San Felipe or Rosarito cannot even drive south to see how far the pavement goes before planning this thing? They had to be "told by government" !!!???

Even off road racing organizers (whose vehicles can go over the road south of Puertecitos at 100 mph) take time to check the roads before the course is determined... then mark the course just before the race.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

So they think hwy 5 will be paved within the next year? OK 14 months. They better get a move on.

Baja Love Ride :?::?::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Sounds like a bunch of self-promoting naive and poorly prepared folks who don't have a clue how to manage such a clusterf#*k.

All the more reason to see it cancelled before someone dies.

Why doesn't the homebuilder build a place and raffle off tickets and forward the proceeds to their selected causes:?:

Like....maybe do something that would really create some money....pay the construction workers (locals), build with (local) materials, and then give the place to the raffle ticket winners....:light:

And this idea comes from a liberal:cool:

Let's see... about 60 miles remain to be built/ paved... almost 100 kms.

They build in 10 km. sections...

Each section takes up to a year to build/ pave. The next to the last section (El Huerfanito) was finished in March, 2010 I think... The last section (to almost Okie Landing) was finished in December... Nine months.

So, 5 to 10 YEARS to get to Laguna Chapala at their rate.

Maybe you are a conservative?

Oh, Geez. Although motoged awoke the sleeping giant by invoking the "L" word. Maybe DK has blood sugar fluctuations, or the extended dosage meds don't last as long as they should.

And here, as I was running through the thread for the first time, I was going to second what Ken said.

Fairly obvious that the organizers didn't have a clue. We hashed this out on another thread. It's really shortsighted to try and combine pavement and off-road cycling. They just didn't get enough interest in their initial proposal.

As for the "L" v. the "C", Rodney King asked, "Can't we all just do this in off-topic?"

That's for sure!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
norte, who only pops on Nomad when I agree with another here about libs? motoged gets no credit, but I do? How unfair is that!?

For that matter:

Where are all of norte's wonderful and helpful posts... how much time does he spend posting maps or history that some like?

"ditto norte" MulegeMichael... oh, p-lease!

Is that what people come here for, DK bashing?

Spread it around... share the love!

Oh, you guys....Davids emoticons belied his intended message: he was jokingly making those comments, I am sure.;D He is just sharing the love

I have hurled insults at David yet have developed respect for the man for his dedication to Baja. If and when we ever meet, I look forward to it. We will jibe each other, let it go, and drink a Tecate and have some fish tacos....and groove to the Baja vibe.

Now, as for the rest of you Republicans :lol::lol:
