Still in love

While out surfing glassy four footers ALL BY MYSELF this morning I reflected upon how fortunate I am to have my wonderful Paula with me. Here I drug her all the way down this godforsaken peninsula to live in view of my little surf paradise, and she tolerates it! As I return from the water, there she is engrossed at her easel. "Was that you out there, honey?"

I know that there are many women whose idea it was to move to Baja, but I'll bet most followed the dreams of their men.

So here's a shout out to all you fabulous Baja Women who have followed your men to this new, exciting and often challenging life. YOU are truly the stuff dreams are made of.

Thanks for the cheer El Jefe!
During those 'challenging' moments I often remind myself of the line from a song "I'd rather live with him in his world, then live without him in mine.'

The young doctor every gringo went to left town. There is a clinic which serves everybody. I received treatment there last year and the doctor was very good. The fee was 100 pesos and the prescriptions were nominal.

For anything serious or critical, you have to get to La Paz, pronto. It is a 6-7 hours drive.

I just don't think that one can reasonably consider a 6-7 hour drive as the response to a critical situation. Things that make Mulege so special are also things that should be a warning to those who know they have any medical conditions that could cause an acute situation. How about the relatively new hospital in Loreto? Haven't seen much written about that facility.

I didn't mean to imply that a 6 or 7 hour drive was reasonable in a crisis. Quite the opposite.

I don't know anything about a new hospital in Loreto. Anybody??

I was speaking of this facility. I don't imagine that it's going to replace Sloan Kettering or Cedars Sinai anytime soon, but for folks in Mulege, it may be a life saver.

It's a nice new building with no staff to speak of. Any kind of SERIOUS care needs to head quickly to La Paz.

Or better yet, get your SKYMED insurance and have yourself flown to the States. As far as trauma medicine goes, you're SOL here in LTO.

PS. Sorry for the hijack......
I followed my sweetie to Loreto in 1986 (What are we going to DO down THERE?) and have never regretted it for a second!!

Loretana is correct. Nice building. That's about it. I've been life flighted out. Good thing. Still here. Dr. Fernando is a good diagnostician. Solved things the American doctors never did solve, for 200 peso fee and 300 pesos in meds. Don't underestimate him.

And don't overestimate him. He is always studying, always learning, but not yet always a safe bet. In a serious situation, don't rely on Loreto or Mulege care-- get to La Paz, or Skymed out-- quickly!!
