Iflyfish busted in Tecate

Yup, you got it right. Old Flyguy got busted driving into the US in Tecate.
Here is what happened, true story.
So Flyguy pulls up in line with the rest of the folks after going thru the document check.
Now I must tell you that I am fond of Lettuce, Bacon and Tomato Sandwiches, and particularly love Mexican Tocino!

So they now have this sniffer truck that drives past your parked vehicle....yup, they pull the flyguy out of line and say "is the bacon in the refrigerator?" Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. "Yup" I says and we go into the rig to examine the contents of the frig. There is my zip locked baggie with my cooked bacon in it. And "whoops, what about those limes?"

After profuse apologies for my smuggling I inquired "why is bacon, actually cooked bacon in a zip lock bag considered contriband?" The answer "Swine Flu", yup, FEAR of Swine Flue!! My jaw about hit the floor on that one, "You're kidding" says I, still flomoxed by my newfound criminal behavior. Not good to say "You've got to be kidding" or something of that nature to these guys. They DO NOT KID!

He told me that this time they were going to wave the $300 fine for my smuggling in the main ingrediant for my BLT.

So my advice to you is eat those good BLT's before you hit the border.

I am glad I refrained from asking if I had to turn in frozen chicken, Avian Flu, but discression being the better part of valor, I passed.

Amazing

That they can sniff out bacon in a zip lock bag INSIDE a refrigerator but have difficulty finding drugs, illegal aliens or money crossing north..........

That'll learn ya to cross AFTER lunch!;) On second thought, it might be more embarrassing to be cited for bacon breath!

But on the upside, it's a good thing they didn't ask where you were hiding the yellow jingle shells!:saint:

After a nuclear medicine procedure, I crossed South with stuff to declare. Mexico turned me around to go through Otay. On re-entry, I was escorted to secondary . . . because I was friggin' radioactive.

Any pork product, even in American package (if opened, like Oscar Meyer ham slices) cannot be brought back north! Raw chicken and eggs are also taboo.

Limes (sour limes) are perfectly fine... and I was directed to Secondary in Tecate once because I declared them... The officer didn't know what was okay or not!!! He said, well a lime is like an orange and those wren't permitted... In secondary, the ag agent walked over, saw the paper on my windshield, said LIMES??... and then sent me on my way... with my limes.

Now, we don't bring anything back just because of the agents who don't even have the list memorized or a copy with them!

Here is the list given to me in 2002 when they took my ham away:

Dog Food!

Was stopped at Tecate, with "packaged -un-opened" (canned or bags) American dog food being brought back from our trip was prohibited..
Best to donate it to your neighbor's dog when leaving to come NOB...

wow' freeze dried soup, that's crazy....I keep a week's worth of freeze dried camping meal's with me..just in case of any thing go's wrong, earhquake, bridge out, snowstorm, (still waiting for that down here) and Im positive 1 of them must have pork and chicken in them..but they are stashed rather well....when I do head north,in a month or so, will be the first time in at least 20 yrs without a dog, which makes a hell of a differince at check's and the border...the custem's folk's are laughing so hard at my dog (wearing sunglasses) that they alway's ask what I have to declare just wave me through!!! another reason to rescue a baja dog!!!

Hey, EVERYONE knows that Swine Flu hides in cooked bacon---it is its favorite hiding spot.

At times it is difficult to not make some remarks, but sure glad you held back on the Chicken and Avian Flu. Could have been real ugly.

The machine that they use is a small truck with a "sniffer" in it that monitors the air. They probably have an xray in there too. Blew me away that they could tell where my pork was....that doesn't sound right. Anyway they were courteous given the circumstances. I am now probably on the terrorist list. Guess I'll need to deep fat fry my bacon before smuggling it from now on.

I'm an "*" (asterisk) guy, routinely get to waste time in secondary. The official at the gate writes something on the slip that goes under the wiper blade and the last two times the folks in secondary couldn't figure out what the note meant and why I was there. As with DK, they've let me pass with limes. For some reason I still had them -- usually hand all the contraband out to the folks hanging out along the line.
