Ultralight Crashes off Los Cerritos
Local ultralight flyer Robert Quirk and a passenger lost power and crashed into the ocean off Los Cerritos at noon today. Waterman extrodinaire Dan
Hansen was key in the rescue. Dave had been out enjoying the Jarrel bite and had just landed his boat at Los Cerritos when the people on the beach
started yelling about the crash. Dave relaunched his boat and with the help of local surfers and the new lifeguards at Los Cerritos pulled the two to
shore. the pilot was in shock but otherwise unhurt, the passenger was not as lucky. He appeared to have broken a leg or hip and was in alot of pain.
He was taken to medical assistance by the local authorities.

While I'm glad nobody was killed, I can't say that I'll miss that obnoxious thing flying around my house everyday.

I've seen that guy flying around it really blows your buzz.
Like a lawnmower or leaf blower in the sky.
I much prefer to watch the pelicans glide along the face of a breaking wave...now THAT'S Baja!

IMO an ultralight in no more of a nusiance then these quads that every family seems to have... yes and many many gringos also....
And while I find them to be a total pain in the ass, I would not wish that someone suffers a possible serious injury just so I could have my peace and
quiet...

This guy has been the major noisemaker here at the beach in Pescadero! Full power beach takeoffs and radical turns. He fkies right over house
tops and the surf lineup over and over. He was seen buzzing right over the whales recently. Quads, generators, leaf blowers are irritants but this
ultralight drones on endlessly some days! I feel sorry for the passenger who was screaming out in pain but the outcome was going to happen sooner or
later. Nice and peaceful this norning except for the sounds of the ocean and waves. Tio

I understand the feelings of the locals... had the same type of issue when I mainly vacationed north of Todos... guy decided he needed water on top of
the hill, had to fill his swimming pool and hot tub. Ran his diesel generator 24/7 ...
from our mutual well.
That didn't last long..........
Just a pity that these folks Don't get it..... and it takes something this harsh to "maybe" let them know they're a major pain in the ass.......

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — It's unlikely South Lake Tahoe resident John Gomez will list his latest adventure — an ultralight airplane crash and a run
through Mexico's hospital system — on his company website: http://www.johnnygadventures.com
Gomez was injured after the ultralight in which he was a passenger crashed into the ocean near Playa Cerritos, Mexico.
Gomez, 51, was visiting Baja, Mex i co, partly as a family vacation to es cape the cold weather, and partly to design a new adventure for his company,
Johnny G Adventures.
After a day of driving dune-buggies, Gomez decided to try the ultralight flight, even though his mother didn't want him to, he said. He took off from
the beach with a pilot who seemed like “one of our total snowboard dudes who went down to Mex ico to totally check out of life,” Go mez said.
They saw a pair of whales and headed out to sea.
“We took one swoop to see the whales breaching. The left didn't go so well and we slammed into the ocean,” Gomez said over the phone from La Paz,
Mexico.
When the ultralight hit the water, it instantly began to sink.
Gomez had to unbuckle his seat belt to keep from being dragged un der.
He was bleeding from a large cut under his chin and was worried about sharks, he said.
The pilot, who was shaken but un injured, swam to Gomez and asked if he was OK.
The cause of the crash is un known.
Boats and surfers in the area headed out to the crash as the two tried to swim in. With his hurt leg, Gomez couldn't climb aboard a boat.
People who had gathered in the water helped him onto a surfboard and lifted him in.
The boats had to wait for a break in the surf before heading to shore.
Gomez dislocated his hip in the accident. An ambulance took him to a hospital where doctors treated his dislocation.
When Gomez returned to the hospital for a CT scan, to make sure his pelvis wasn't fractured, he found the doctors had gone on strike.
“The medical things down here are just mind-boggling,” Gomez said.
The hospital didn't have pillows and he was forced to hide his pain killers in his bed because hospital staff told him people would steal them if he
didn't, he said.
Because he can't bend at the waist, Gomez cannot sit in an airport wheelchair or fly on a commercial airplane, which has left him trapped in Mexico
for the past week.
“I've got people saying they're going to pack up a burro and they're going to be down here in April to pick me up,” Gomez said with a laugh.
After several offers of “rescue” from his friends, Gomez has arranged a flight home.
He should arrive Saturday or Sun day, depending on the weather, he said.
“I need this adventure to come to an end,” Gomez said. “I don't need to get into a car crash on the way home.”
Gomez laughed over the phone at the irony of his mis-adventure. The goal in life is not to live long but to live life.
“Life is much too adventurous to not make light of it,” he said.
