flying with fishing reels

i just got word from some amigos flying out of loreto back to the states that they weren't allowed to fly with their fishing reels in the carryon luggage..authorities in loreto forced them to put all their reels in their checked baggage before jumping on the plane...they also talked to other folks at the airport that were made to do the same...when they got to the states and opened the bags, all the reels were gone...beware nomads, we've got another scam going on here.

I just talked to Alaska Air about this, and they said that Alaska/Horizon definately allows reels to be hand carried.

The agent I spoke to (and they had heard about this) said that it is the Mexican version of TSA who did not allow the reels to be hand carried.

That is a private security (?!!) company the airport contracts.

They will have to peel my husband's cold dead hands off his AVET reels to get them away from him!! :O

I flew Volaris from TJ to La Paz and they wouldn't let me through security with a reel in my carry on. I had to go back and check the bag but at least the reel was still there when I got to La Paz.

I travel with reels in my purse regularly. What seems to help is that I put a thin layer of bubble wrap around each reel and secure with a rubber band and attach a copy of the TSA statement about traveling with reels....

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1...

If we are flying with reels checked luggage, we run a cable/gun lock through all of them. Just a little hard to snatch a bundle of them.

Everybody knows how easy it is to hijack a plane with a fishing reel. They do it all the time.

Alaska will allow as a carry on. Volaris (TIJ-LAP) required me to strip the line from the reel if I wanted it as a carry-on.

I've never heard of anyone having this problmem without the line on the reels.....The info I got it the line is what some airports/Security won't let through. Doesn't really matter what the Airline tells you if the TSA or their conterpart won't let you past security.

So strip your line off your reels or put it in checked...........Believe me I know how hard this is. When I went to PV I was so nervous

I've never had problems using Alaska Airlines. They understand how important fishermen are to the economy of their state and accomodate us on all flights everywhere. They even allow us to bring rod tubes as carry ons as long as they fit in the overhead compartments.

My one piece rods won't fit in the overheads but Alaska counts my rod tube and tackle box as one piece of luggage and no oversize fees.

Mexican TSA types don't allow reels with line as a carry on

Security in TJ WILL NOT let you carry on reels with line.
