Update on Los Arcos in La Paz?
Just wondering what the status is on Los Arcos in La Paz, if anyone knows. I keep hoping it re-opens, but I can't find anything that indicates it has
or will. Anyone have insider news?

I understand that they had a labor dispute. And, the owners appear to have bigger fish to fry viz other developments. But, at the end of the day, it
would seem to me that this is a premier property that deserves a future.
Given that gnukid has provided photographic evidence that La Paz real estate is apparently vibrant, it would not make sense for this iconic property
property to sit shuttered for a long time. JMHO

Los Arcos to reopen
The owners have reached an agreement with the powers to be.
They plan to do some upgrading and to reopen, including the Cabañas. The time line was not mentioned.

Word on the street that it would reopen after the elections/change of power. Aggrement was reached awhile ago for back pay, etc. Owners are Senator
Coppola's family.... owners of the Finnisterra.

Strikers are still there and brewing their coffee on the malecon.
I think the world is run by C- students.

I will make a point of swinging by and talking to the strikers outside, see what they've heard.

Does anyone know the straight story of what the strike/closure was all about?
Was it a genuine labor dispute, or were the union leaders pressured into a strike by political enemies of Senator Coppola?
Or was it the fact that business was slow and the owners didn't want to absorb the negative cashflow?
Conversion to condos has also been mentioned as a possible reason for the closure.
We are concerned because we don't like witnessing the loss of our landmark businesses. Los Arcos had already been struck by the union a year or so
before this latest closure. Workers' rights are one thing, but destruction of old line businesses that are part of our local cultural heritage is
something else.
We've lost La Posada, the Grand Baja and now Los Arcos due in part to labor problems, and the La Perla department store due to fire. Two of those
sites are still bare ground and empty space and don't add any value to the community, and the decay of Los Arcos is dragging down the whole south end
of the Malecon.

I stopped by the Los Arcos to talk to the duty strikee this morning. To my surprise, there wasn't a soul around. There was the gathering spot with a
notebook on the table and a duty roster on the wall, but nobody to talk to. I then went down to the Las Cabañas section to see if someone was around
over there ... nope. I did talk to a taxi driver waiting across the street, he hadn't heard anything. He was surprised that no one was on duty, so I
suppose that's unusual. I will swing by the hotel on my next trip down the malecon and see if there's anyone to talk to.
Here's what the hotel looks like today
The area where the strikers usually hang out
The area is empty, but note the logbook on the table. Note also, no more coffee pot.
"Don't urinate in the planters or in the lobby" Fortunately, BCS has one of the highest literacy rates in Mexico, so this shouldn't be a
problem--except, perhaps, with whoever wrote the note on the sign.
The duty roster, so we COULD find out who's UA/AWOL, if we cared.
The sidewalk outside the once-venerable La Paz landmark. Note the broken planter.
I had heard that the Las Cabañas section was receiving guests again. Not so, as these two photos make clear.
Looking inside the lobby through the gated front entrance.
When I find out more, I will post

Sad sad... How do union employees think that killing their source of income will help them earn more money? Is there ever a point when the government
or court system steps in to resolve a dispute before it is too late?
Thanks for the great photos Steve!
(other than not sizing them to 800 pixels or less, you done good!)

Damn, I was under the impression that photobucket would do that for me. I'll get it right next time. So, that is 800 pixels total? What are the best
two numbers to use when re-sizing?

Just no one dimension larger than 800. Example, 800X700 is ok.

Here is the part of my 'how to' you missed:
Just below where you see:
"Upload to Photobucket"
is this:
"Customize your upload options" (in blue text)
Click that!
Then see this, (pick one of 800 or less, the 640 is perfect):
100x75
160x120
320x240 (Medium)
640x480 (Large)
*800x600 (15" monitor)
1024x768 (17" monitor)
1280x960
1600x1200
2048x1536
2592x1944
3648x2736
4000x3000
click save!

Thanks for the info, David and BillP. I'll get to it soon.
In the meantime, I drove by the hotel this morning and still, nobody on duty.

How sad. The Los Arcos was a wonderful place to go for a special occassion, brimming with tradition and charm. After being sealed up for so long
it's hard to imagine that they will ever be able to bring it back to it's former glory. There are no winners in that stand-off.

In this forum in the past, the issue of employer/employee relations in general gets avery dim view. Based on those posts, it seems like many
employers, especially small businesses, get shake downs from employees frequently because of the ease of doing so legally and because, government
agency wise, there is a ready bias against the employer, especially in La Paz.
The thing that gets me about Los Arcos, is that the employees that I came in contact with during my stays there were always contented, efficient, very
pleasant, proactive, prompt, very accomodating, well trained and professional. Usually if things are going south, it is easy to pick up on crappy
attitudes of the help. Didn't see any there.
So, I don't know what to think with regard to what happened at Los Arcos. Wish I knew the real skinny; very curious.
