Anyone catching anything in the southern SOC

I have been too lazy to put my boat and fishing gear back together since my return. Doesn't seem to be a rush as the water is cold at 70 and the report has been dismal. Anyone reporting any catching going on?

Lots of bait and jacks in close to the beach, but I am seeing very little activity outside the trough.

I haven't been out in three weeks (sun barnacles issue) but the 4 before that were lousy. That 70 degree water is a lot warmer than it was! You didn't miss anything. Saw a school of dolphins out there this morning though.

You go out this morning? or you spotthem from the beach/house?

What are sun barnacles?

There is a big dead sea lion to the south around the point. Stay away as it really stinks. My 50lb 5mo old puppy ran up and tried to chew off a bite, it was very rancid.

Our dogs have lobo breath too. Saw the dolphins from the house, they were out there for a while.
Don't think you are quite old enough, and being from the Great Northwest, to have accumulated sun stuff. I'm a So Cal boy from the 60's, then 20 years on Maui. Before sunblock other than coco butter. Jeez...the things we used to do....and I was one of the first to carry around an umbrella.

Get better soon. if you need anything from the states let me know. My mom's coming down on monday.

your right about there not being a lot of sun where I grew up, we are more likely to drown than get a sunburn. however my grandfather got skin cancer from spending the summers in AK on the fishing boat, day in day out.

I was schooled and darn near spooled by what I think was a big jurel this morning, southeast area of Cerralvo. Avet MXL 2 speed, 40lb topshot w/ 65lb braid. I could not even slow him down!:O

I did see several nice fish hit the deck on a few other other boats.

Hope I'm next!

I hear those pacificos fight hard. What's the limit on them?

I haven't put my boat in the water yet either but I have rode down the beach from BV to Lighthouse point a couple of times ( last time was today) with not much to see. I caught a couple of fun size (8lbs or so) jacks a few days ago but nothing else. I saw a large school of jacks maybe 10-15lbs doing that "daisy chain" thing this afternoon and they were just out of casting range. They usually ignore a lure when they are just milling around but if you are there when they are ready to do something different you can score. They came after my lure for a moment but they were always just out of range.....tomorrow will be another day.....dt

Yes FA, jurel is Spanish for yellowtail. There is a very good grade of fish hitting around Cerralvo right now! Heading back out Tuesday morning from Muertos with a bigger gun!:o

Well, we did something this week out of Santa Rosalia that I have never done before on the Sea of Cortez. We found a school of White Sea Bass that varied in size from around 20 pounds to a couple that were 47 or 48. I have only caught a couple of small fish and can count the number of White Sea Bass that I know of on one hand.
So, while yellowtail have been a little on the slow side this year, this was a real surprise. And, as bajabass can report, a 48 lb White Sea Bass is no comparison in terms of pulling power to a 20 lb yellowtail, but the fillets were sure great.

Jurel is spanish for many different species such of jacks...including but not limited to jack crevalles, green jacks, trevalles, yellowtails..ect. Any of several fish in the carangid(jack) species are called Jurel.

I have never caught a Yellowtail, but I don't jig.
I have caught 100s of jack crevalles and green jacks which are also called Jurels.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/jurel

I figured you meant YT, due to your description of the fight. Toro's(crevalles) also fight really hard and you alwasy think you have a big one on, ofter to be surprised as hell to find it is much smaller than you think.

tight lines.

Well, close but not quite. One of the problems with a lot of the Spanish names for fish is that they vary area by area. While Jurel is pretty widely accepted for Yellowtail both here and on the mainland there are some local differences. To be really specific the people in the know will clarify and call them Jurel de Castilla for Yellowtail and Jurel Isleno for Island Jack. Amberjack on the other hand are almost always called Pez Fuerte. Rainbow Runners are usually misnamed as Jurel but actually called Salmon by the more scientifically oriented.
One of the best sources for good fish information that has good names as well as identification is www.mexfish.com

Here on the eastcape. A Jack Crevalle is a jurel or toro, but we don't have a lot of YT. I just helped a couple locals guys put air in their tires. I asked them if they had any luck and they proudly displayed their cooler of jurel.
(crevalle).

I agree that it is a regional thing.

Up here a Jack Crevalle is a Toro, which was how I heard it called at Muertos as well but the names vary greatly by region.

Here it just depends on who you talk to. It seems the small ones are often called jurel. I also saw them labeled once in mega as jurel.

I call them toros myself.

I was only asking bajabass for clarification, nothing more.
