TIJUANA – The Mexican army led an operation Friday that netted the crime boss in Mexicali of the Sinaloa cartel and a large arsenal that included grenade launchers and grenades, the Secretary of National Defense announced.

The crime leader was identified as Jesús Raúl Ochoa Zazueta, a former state investigator. He was arrested along with nine other alleged drug traffickers, including a minor. All are linked to the killing of five men at a bar in Mexicali on Jan. 24, according to the announcement issued Saturday.

A total of 440 pounds of cocaine also were seized, as well as $13,100 in U.S. dollars and 10,000 in pesos.

The weapons seized included 17,835 cartridges of different calibers, 19 rifles, three pistols, four grenade launchers, ten 40 mm grenades, and 80 clips for pistols of various calibers.

According to the defense department, Ochoa Zazueta led the Mexicali cell of the Sinaloa cartel that received orders from Gonzalo Inzunza Inzunza, a chief for Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who controls the Sinaloa cartel.

The army led the operation at dawn Friday across five Mexicali neighborhoods. The detained were identified as Ricardo Ibarra Célis, 43; Carlos Rodrigo Ibarra Medina, 39; Julio César Ballesteros Cavada, 24; Héctor Ibarra Monreal, 27; Jesús Raúl Ochoa Zazueta, 30; Omar and David Rodríguez (no ages given); Diana Zazueta Borboa, 24; Aurora Rocha Hernández, 21; and an unidentified minor.
