Insurance requirements

Just read in the I.V. Press that B.C. passed a law that requires EVERY DRIVER in B.C. have insurance. First time a warning, next a citation.

They are controlling the premiums. Just $80 for $24K worth of annual coverage (property, medical). That's about half the price of an add-on policy to your USA car insurance policy. Hope they let us participate.

Half of these folks can't afford to get their car registered. Insurance wont happen for them. It'll just be another payday for a cop.
I used to say, half jokingly, when the police want a raise, all they get are a few more stop signs to generate more income.

It's funny how people have $40 for a tank of gas but not $80 a year for full insurance- especially the crazy way people drive down here. The truth is they have the money for car insurance, it just isn't important to them, that's all. Let those fools pay the mordidas instead. The poor in Mexico walk or take shared cabs- they don't drive around in private cars and then complain they are too broke for car insurance.

I read that off the El Dorado board, didn't read the
article, from the post I read, it appears they may
be targeting Gringos for not having Mex Auto Ins.
Not that I haven't driven a time or 2 without Mex Ins,
don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't drive in
Mex with a policy with only 24k of coverage regardless
of the price

Had a friend staying in Baja Malibu tell me he was stopped for the first time on his quad after 7 years down there by a policeman asking where his license plate on the quad was. He told the policeman he lived in Baja Malibu and thus he did not have any stickers on it from California, where he used to live. The policeman was going to take his quad but he told him he just wanted to know where it was being taken so he could have his attorney go with him down there to get it back. On that note the policeman let him go.
He will now go back into California to get a sticker for off road vehicle even though he does not live there to stop any future issues with the law enforcement. Mexico would be the wiser to allow Americans to buy stickers for $20 a year for off road vehicles to keep it simple and not upset the Americans bringing dollars into Baja. So, next they will probably take issue with the stickers from California or elsewhere.
I know a lot of people will probably say that off road vehicles should not be on the roads, since California will not let you do this but there are more Nationals doing this than Americans in Mexico. Now, maybe just once they will think about it and make it across the board if really wanting these off road vehicles to be licensed in some fashion. Hope this is not just another curve to stick it to Americans thus making more issues than needed especially now. Hard enough getting friends and relatives to come down and visit Baja without stories of Mexico Police taking their off road vehicles if they bring them down.
We all get insurance for Mexico yearly or if friends/relatives for the days they will be down even if their U.S. insurance says it cover 25, 50 or 125 miles into Mexico. This always gets people going when you try to tell them their American Insurance will not work in Mexico due to taking too long to have contact at the accident and in posting bond if needed. They start listening when I tell them they will wait in a stinking jail cell until their insurance agent takes care of acciden,t even if it is not their fault. Tough way to put it but the real world down Mexico way is what makes this insurance from Mexico a must. Take Care & Travel Safe------- "No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777
