Mexican Military gets lost and crosses Bridge #2 (Nuevo Laredo) into the USA! (with video)

Can you imagine sitting in the line in San Ysidro and seeing a the Mexican Military min-convoy roll up to the booth? Geesh. What are the contingency plans? What if they had opened fire on the inspectors? What if they weren't military at all? What a potential mess. This really isn't good that they can roll up to the inspection booths and through... is it?

Mexican troops cross into the United States at Bridge Two
Story Created: Jun 23, 2011
Story Updated: Jun 23, 2011
A convoy of three military trucks loaded with Mexican soldiers crosses the border at Bridge Number Two clearly violating international law.

It happens as Customs and Border Protection inspectors try to figure out what to do.

A CBP spokesperson says they got on the phone with Mexican authorities after being alerted that the military trucks were heading their direction loaded down with soldiers and weapons.

Mexican leaders say the soldiers, who had just been deployed to Nuevo Laredo, didn't know the area, got lost and then made their way through Bridge Two.

It's important to note that CBP did not tell us about the potentially serious situation. It came from another law enforcement agency.

Some callers to our newsroom were upset inspectors allowed the Mexican military to get so close to all those inspection booths over at Bridge Number Two.

Some noted had it been Mexican drug lords they could have taken inspectors by surprise and easily crossed the international border deeper into the United States.

Hardly, huh? Imagine Mexico's response if this were the other way around. I do think the BP needs a plan for this. I would have bailed out of my car and run for cover.

swooshi:
they crossed a bridge, but did not cross the border.
what law was "clearly" broken?
what law says army vehicle may not drive on public roads?

swooshi, please verify this crap before you post it.

So you think it would be OK for the Mexican army to cross at San Ysidro and take the U-Turn loop back into Mexico? I don't.

"A convoy of three military trucks loaded with Mexican soldiers crosses the border at Bridge Number Two clearly violating international law." That's pretty clear to me.

The problem is that once you get into the wrong lane and merge into the border traffic, there are rarely any options to turn around or get out of the line. After looking at the video in the link my instincts would have told me (if I was there) that they were hunting down somebody in the line.

I would have probably been thinking along Woooosh's idea of running for cover...

True. Once you get on that lane, theres no way out like it used to many years ago. A few months ago i got caught in a similar situation at the san ysidro border, and i had to do a 1hr wait, and then like a fool tell the inspector i made a wrong turn and i didn't have my passport.

It was a bridge they crossed over. Half of the bridge is in the United States so actually they did cross over into the US. Did they do this illegally? Who cares. There have been reports of the Mexican Military crossing over into the US a lot at different border locations but never at a customs booth!

Didn't they take those wrong-turn soldiers to jail for entering with guns? Think so.

let the headline read "The Shoddy Bridge Over River Journalism"

The US media once again overstepping, or would it more aptly be said "under-cutting" their professional standard by floating callers' quips as their editorial opinion.

Has the new ethic of US journalistic reporting really bottomed out by resorting to the sensationalization of events? Why is this the manner in which current events are reported? Why have the high ethical standards of journalism for which the US was once respected become sub-standardized?

The handling of this event by the news media won't engender respect and cooperation between the US and Mexico, in my opinion, but create fodder to further alienate the relationship between neighbors. The journalistic spin on today's event, and I don't give it further weight by calling it an international incident or refer to a violation of international law, was really crafted to engender fear and disrespect in the minds of many Americans.

People tend to fear and even dislike that which confuses them. If they are not offered a credible explanation of that which they question they hold that fear and in time embellish it. We look to our leaders to give us explanation and guidance. The vehicle through which this is delivered is the media which bears a great responsibility in the formation of ideology of those who receive its information. To accurately report the facts as they are is the duty of a reporter. Editorial journalistic opinion is another arena. Of late this distinction is blurred.

Just report the facts and leave it at that, imo.

This is your Baja editorial reporter writing from the beautiful Central Pacific Coast.
