Mayors suggest new drivers license for border crossing
Only a few SoCal Mayors went to TJ for this conference because they thought is was too dangerous.
"Some lamented that Southern California participation at the conference was low. Besides Sanders, the region’s mayors in attendance came from West
Covina, South El Monte, Imperial Beach, Bell Gardens and Redondo Beach. Representing Chula Vista was vice-mayor Rudy Ramirez." Ruben Smith, an
attorney from Orange County who first proposed the binational mayors summit, said some California mayors did not come because “there’s still a
misperception about whether or not it’s safe here.”

TIJUANA — Mayors from both sides of the border on Friday called for an enhanced California driver’s license that could be used as a border-crossing
document for people entering the United States from Mexico.
The issue was was one of numerous measures recommended during the seventh Binational Mayors Summit, which brought together some mayors from Southern
California and Baja California. The twice-yearly forum seeks to strengthen cross-border ties by focusing on common issues such as public safety,
infrastructure, tourism and economic development.
While the mayors can’t set policy on many of these matters, participants said the meetings allow them to come up with joint strategies. “We can draw
federal and state attention on both sides,” said San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. “They can really see that this is a vibrant and important border.”
Tijuana Mayor Carlos Bustamante, who hosted the conference, said the sessions are useful because “ideas come out of here. It allows us to lobby for
what is needed.”
Among the ideas that emerged:
•The need to share information on individuals who are deported from the United States to Mexico.
•Forming a cross-border block of chambers of commerce.
•Increasing cross-border collaboration among universities.
•Developing an inventory of regional water resources and projects such as a seawater desalination plant being studied in Rosarito Beach.
•Conserving ecological systems that span the border.
•Strengthening cultural and sports tourism on both sides of the border.
Speakers at the event included Baja California Gov. José Guadalupe Osuna Millán and Kevin McAleenan, assistant to the commissioner of U.S. Customs and
Border Protection.
McAleenan said that with aging infrastructure on the border and limited resources for rebuilding, it is important to segment travelers efficiently
through systems such as the SENTRI program for prescreened crossers.

No wonder they had poor attendance. The smart ones stayed home.
What a bunch of nonsense. What will a "border crossing DL" have to do with processing travelers?
Ohhh...I know. Nothing. Just another revenue sucker to make us feel like they care.
This will never happen and city mayors should stay out of federal problems. I would really think this if I thought they were making anything other
than noise so they would get the free lunch.

I don't understand the purpose of border crossing drivers license either.
If people are too lazy to get a passport then they are too lazy to get a border crossing DL.

I like the idea of the enhanced California driver’s license because with that they could do away with the US passport requirement because it will have
security features that could meet the stringent requirements set by WHTI and Homeland security.
I hate bringing my passport every time I go to the Tijuana/Baja area. The passport requirement is keeping a lot of Mexican-American big families from
visiting the border because of the costs of passports and even passcards that are a hassle to get.

Woooosh acts like real estate fraud is only a problem in Mexico and in particle Baja.
Real estate fraud is a big problem in the USA too and is a major reason why we are struggling to get out of the Bush recession even a few years later
after the housing bubble/fraud where nobody went to jail.

Because Baja is Dibble's beat and she's a fair and balanced reporter. Just a "throw down", I see it done on the Food Network all the time. She is
listed in the link below as a staff writer for the Baja Secretary of Tourism. She should write the truth about the current situation in Baja Real
Estate land titles and fraud on the Baja Secretary of Tourism site. Yup, that'll work for me.

I don't disagree with what she writes generally, but I do think she should tell the other side of the topics she does cover. Why tell half only the
story when the whole story makes more sense? We get the local crime news on the Rosarito Blog, so that's not it.

I think they have enough cars in the crossing lanes as it is. They can't efficiently process the cars they have in line now, and won't until the San
Ysidro remodel project is done.

Woooosh's opinions aren't worth more than anybody else including mine. Any heart, soul, money and blood invested by Woooosh was done by Woooosh for
Woooosh and nobody else.
I wasn't attacking Woooosh. I save that for the "OT" area, but I was just pointing out that real estate fraud happens everywhere not just in Baja.
Real estate fraud and rip offs happen all the time in California.
And if anything Woooosh was unfairly attacking Sandra Dibble when she isn't here to defend herself against Woooosh's non stop attacks on Sandra
Dibble. Now I understand some San Diego border reporter monitor forums for some unknown reason, but I doubt many of them post on those forums. That's
how I started talking to Anne Cleary who was the San Diego Tribune border reporter before Sandra Dibble came on scene. I have even talked to Sandra
Dibble a few times via email on some other issues, and she has a good understanding on border issues and the weird players who also cover this area.

Oh BTW here is something you'll never hear from Woooosh:According to a recent article in the "AFT-Tijuana" Crime has dropped in the Rosarito Beach
area due to the police pro-active approach in the area. (Woooosh wants us all to believe everybody in Rosarito is cowering in fear behind their doors,
because of the drug cartels)

Are you going nuts Joe? You argue the same tired points and loose every time because the words in my posts speak for themselves. My actions to
protect the beach for the people of Rosarito are a matter of public record- it is an expensive fight and there in no profit in it for us- so forget
that part about me being out for myself. Yes I have taken "ownership" of this cause to keep the beach clean, safe, free and accessible for the
disabled. What's wrong with that?
Sandra Dibble reads these posts. Dibble is listed as a staff writer for the Baja Tourism Department aside from her writings at the Union Tribune. If
she has a problem with that- have her ask the Baja Tourism Department to take her name off their site. There is no non-stop attack on Dibble taking
place, I just challenge her to tell both sides of the story to both audiences who pay her bills. I would think it is hard to be a Staff Writer for
the Baja Tourism Department and still be unbiased in the UT reporting, No? I generally agree with her articles as far as they go. I have e-mailed
back and forth to Dibble on topics like the Donated Lifeguard towers a few years back... so what? Dibble and I disagree.
The security situation in Rosarito is fluid at best and I've always given them credit when it is due. I was a "cheerleader" for the Police under
Capt. Montero- remember? If AFN says things are great and getting better good for them. Zeta says the police are 100% corrupt. Choose your media to
believe this week. I talk to all the three heads of the Rosarito Police, the Tourist Police and the Auxiliary police. I tell them exactly what I
post here and they appreciate the perspective. You can ask any of them who I am. But who are you Joe?
The "head of the police" being interviewed in the AFN article is the PRI political appointee by Robles, not the true head of the police (Magdelena)
that Montero had trained. They need to promote Rosarito as being safe at all costs. It's what they do. It is safe for tourists- not so much for
locals and businesses. That same AFN article you link says there were 15,000 tourists in Rosarito for the 4th of July weekend, most of them from the
USA. huh? Not a chance that number is even close. When Rosarito is safe for locals and rebounds economically- I'll let you know Joe, Nancy, Maggie,
Sandra... whoever you are. Post as a real person and you'll get the respect here you seek.
