Kikey at San Antonio de las Minas
A frined of mine just returned from an Ensenada trip. He said
that he had a tasety Ribe Eye Steak at La Fonda. Also
he dined at the restaurant El Morro by the University.
His comments were that they make a good clam chowder and decent pasta. He loved the tropical Martinis, especially
the Tamarindo Martini.
His last stop was at San Antonio de las Minas at a place
called Kikey where he said he had a very large apple pie
that was filled so high that the crust takes on the form of
a peaked volcano,rather triangular in shape.
Can anyone comment on these places. I know how the food was at La Fonda when Dimitri used to run it, but not recently.

Never heard of Kikey's, but that doesn't mean anything.
The Apple Pie issue out there......well, it seems they have had this very long ongoing competition to see how engorged they can make one and, in my
opinion, they are all, albeit huge, second rate. There's just not a really good Apple Pie in the area. In fact, I'm convinced most are made with
canned, sliced apples.
I mean....why does an Apple Pie have to look like half of a basketball??

hijack, yes, but since we're discussing pies, news you need...
apple pie, pecan pie, mango-peach pie, chocolate cream pie, key lime pie, lemon meringue pie, strawberry pie, cherry pie...are you drooling yet?
sugar free apple pie, too, and pumpkin and other specials for holidays.
Loreto has something to look forward to: Ette's Pie Shoppe, on Salvatierra, opening November 1. American owner, Paulette Gouchi, is a fabulous
cook, and the pies are to die for. no canned apple filling here...
if you can't wait that long...go to the Sunday market in Zaragoza. she's there every Sunday with one of her crew, selling pie by the slice (30 pesos)
or whole (180 pesos). but go early, she's usually sold out by 9:30 or so. she's also doing (full) pies by special order.

Maybe it is Kiki's?
There is a restaurant in downtown Ensenada that has been there for many years called "Las Cazuelas de Kiki's". Maybe they opened up a place in San
Antonio de Las Minas.
When we visited the Guadalupe Valley last month, we were amazed at all the new businesses - restaurants, wine tasting rooms, places to stay, etc.,
that have opened up there in the last year.
Regarding the sky-high apple pie, Dennis has it right, it is meh.
Regarding La Fonda, I am glad that your friend had an acceptable meal there, but we had a string of very bad meals there a year ago.
Nearby, Ruben's Lighthouse opened recently. It is next to the La Mision hotel, but down nearer to the beach and I have heard good things about it.
Steaks, seafood, happy hour promotions, Sunday buffet brunch with live music and also, most evenings.

I recently heard that Kiki's in downtown Ensenada closed. I have not been able to verify that. Used to serve up a fantastic breakfast at Kiki's.
The SAME boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It's about what you are made of NOT the circumstance.

Used to eat breakfast there often . the last time we went it was some other name Maybe they did move to San Antino de Las Mina. although my favorite

I think that the spelling is correct. It is supposed to sound like "Que key"
as in some type of pastel,cake?
Anyway has Anyone tried the El Moro restuarant by the University?

Punta Morro Resort and Restaurant
Haven't visited for a while, but all our dining experiences there were very good and the setting is spectacular.

Kiky's in San Antonio de las Minas is new and no relations to Kiki's in Ens. Kiki's in Ens closed the original location and reopened acrossed the
street from Las Cazuelas. I do believe the Kikey's in SADLM only makes pies. Dennis is right on about the pie wars there. They like to make them
big - which makes them impressive to see, but they lack taste. And they sure as heck are NOT growing apples there! You want a good pie, Costco is
the answer.
There are DOZENS of new eateries and businesses in the Valle de Guadalupe (and Ensenada). La Fonda, like the apple pies, is nice to look at, but your
money is much better spent at Splash for seafood or at Sano's for meat. "El Morro" is Punta Morro, and they have a nice restaurant at the hotel
there. Definitely a great place for fancy c-cktails. It's good, but again, there are much better places, especially on that side of town. There are
3 great restaurants at Viento (Gazuza, El Sarmiento and Terra Noble), Boules in San Miguel.
Friends don't let friends drink white zinfandel.
