PROPANE PRICES,,,still subsidised?

when in mex some years ago,,it seemed propane was quite heavily subsidised,,,is that still the case??
.....I've got an old ford bus with 460cc engine,,,and am wondering if it's worth converting?

...any examples of comparible gas/propane costs?
..and how's accessibility?...anywhere I can find a map with propane locations?

...I realize driving propane only WILL be somewhat more challenging than gas,,but it's mexico after all,,,or I could go duel-fuel.
..couldn't find any discussion of this anywhere.
..thanks for any inf/ideas!!

it takes 1.35 gallons of propane to equal the energy in one gallon of gas.

i think propane is a better deal than gas still.

what is it, like 2 bucks per gallon bulk

There is a guy staying here now( Cuesta RV, Mulege) who is happily running propane. I'll try to get him to post or his email.

...useful information,folks!
...is that 2bucks/gal the mexico equivalent?
..and gas is ~3.50 or so??
...yup,,B&S,,can be tougher to fill up if your travelling distance at night!,,,,searching out the propane station in each town,,waiting for one to open up in the morning 'mexico time'.......probably a duel fuel system is the answer.......and being based in one area like Willy's friend-be interesting to hear his story!

Our 34 foot moho is duel fuel

Works great and propane is easy to find in Baja

I use gas on the grades and propane on the flats and downhills

I use ONLY gas thru the states because of the hiked price of propane there

Hope this helps

sold out and got out !!!

Propane is sold at seperate locations than gasoline... Not part of Pemex.

In Colonia V. Guerrero, it is at the top of the rise, on the right... just past the turn of Posada Don Diego RV Park.

In El Rosario the propane is just past the sharp turn in Hwy. 1 (at Mama Espinoza's), on the left... This was the older Espinoza owned Pemex station years ago, fyi. Just propane now.

Running that out...

6.06 pesos per liter = 22.94 pesos per gallon (3.785 liters per gallon)

IF 13 pesos to the dollar, then $1.76 dollars per gallon. (22.94/13)

IF it takes 1.35 gallons of propane to equal a gallon of gasoline in energy... then (1.76 x 1.35) or $2.38 is the true cost per gallon for the same energy. Gasoline was $2.61/ gallon at Pemex (Magna) last time I bought some in San Felipe (~Jan. 4).

Gas Caburacion is more expensive and many gas domestico plants will not sell it for use as motor fuel. I ran LPG motor fuel in Mexico for 40,000 + miles during the nineties. I think it made more sense then. NOVA was still around and was heavily laced into Magna Sin. Caused a lot of knocking and pinging. The cheapest I remember LPG was in March of 1995, when the devaluing peso sagged the price down to twenty-three cents US per gallon (eqvt). For MPG I factored in a 23% decrease in mpg as compared to gasoline. On the mainland many gas carburacion dispensing stations are now choked with weeds.

The Pemex refinery in Celaya produces a lot of LPG, but very much like gasoline, Mexico imports a lot of it for northern Mexico ansd the Baja peninsula.

thanks folks,,a bit more math....

propane is about 65% efficiency to volume as gas...or need ~1.35 times the $1.76 to compare realistically.....
.......so equivalent BTU's to Gas is about .....$2.40

...gas itself is ~100 pesos for premium in mex per litre,,,
.....100/13x3.8=~$290:?:
or at 20% savings ,you'd have to do,,,,

...more math,,,,,let's say the beast get's 12 mpg,, and savings for propane is $.65 per 12 miles,,,the system would be ~$1500 to install with resourcefulness,,,
,,so 1500/.65=2307gal x12miles/gal=.....~27,000miles to pay-off the conversion

conclusion--either my math is real BAD(quite possible),,or the prospect is very NOT worth-it!
...UNLESS you've already got a duel-fuel system installed

Careful there, Big Guy. You're starting to sound like one of those overeducated liberal elites:lol:
